Being Belgian might get you into the Belgian hall of fame.

DoVy....I don't think it's a matter of being a manager in the Conference that has people riled up. I think it's more a matter of a 3rd year manager who would normally have limited experience and a more obscure reputation being a realistic choice for any national team's side.

Having said that...it's your game. If managing Belgium makes you happy...then stay. Don't let the masses bully you. Unless they're wearing kilts!

It's a growing trend. First EPL teams pick managers with no experience, and now international teams are doing it too. See the last Wales manager and new Eire manager as examples.

Are we implying the reputation "bug" is actually realism?

I suppose the trend has come about because of a lack of proven successful managers about - even the good ones have bad spells that tarnish their cv's, and the chairman can at least claim "no one could have known" if his unknown quantity turns out to be crap.

No. I think these international teams are more prepared to risk everything on a "name" with no managerial experience than a manager with some (or even lots) of experience at the lower levels.

Well, you could theorise that international management is more about charisma and motivation than coaching and it therefore doesn't matter as much.

International failure has the potential to ruin a decent manager's reputation, though. See German former Jockland boss. I can imagine a lot of top managers wouldn't consider taking an international post outside their own country because of the uncertainty of it.

McBerti supports the theory that I just mentioned, IMO. He was a respected coach but didn't have that charisma and motivational ability the Jocks needed from their coach at that time.
