First step in the English leagues, only the Vauxhalls agreed to give me a try. Bit hard at first as I was struggling to learn English while managing the club but we got some pretty good results
Position: Winner of Conference North
FA cup & FA Trophy: exit on 2nd round (didn't even try, players were wasted)
Couple of clever sales at the end of the season allowed the club to get a nice green balance for 06-07 season.
2006-2007: Vauxhall Motors English Nationals
The year was VERY hard. Tons of games all over the schedule and players ended up injured more often than not. Managed to keep out of relegation but 2 month physio for our main striker AND goalie made the end of the season very painful.
Position: 16th
FA cup: exit on 4nd round, 6-0 against Alfreton. No ready goalie hurts, learned my lesson there...
Finances were still green, but I felt that the club wouldn't go anywhere but down if we didn't improve our facilities. Fans & Board were deligthed about my work...'till I gave ultimatun for improved training facilities...
2007-2008: Forced holidays
Being sacked by Vauxhall Motors on June 2007 wasn't the best thing that happened during my so far short manager career.
After some months on holidays, I was approached by Ely Rangers in November, only to be sacked again 3 months later because I was too hard on the players apparently...
Wasn't too happy about that since I had spent hours and hours trying to figure out what to do with these Welsh players
2008-2009: Newry N.Ireland Second Division
February 2008, Newry approaches me for managing position. I immediately accept and am glad to have some months to prepare the next season. No transfer budget, way overpaid players, low wages budget...Sounded perfect
I decided right there to let go/sale the big guns of the team and focus on the young ones, offering cheap contracts to all of them.
After a VERY painful start (the first friendlies were just nightmarish!!), Newry firm ended up quite well. My English getting better probably helped.
Position: N.Irish 2nd division champions
N.Irish Cup: Semi final
Despite everything however, we were still losing money, so I had to cut on everything even more but at least, I still had a job and fans were quite happy.
2009-2010: Newry N.Ireland First Division
Very rough season but for the first time in apparently years, Newry was seeing green numbers at the end of the month (first time positive on november 2009: +12£!!). Lots more people in the stadium helped during the year and the team of youngsters was developping nicely with only a tweak here and there.
Position: 4th
N.Irish Cup: Semi Final (2-0 Glentoran)
N.Irish Int League Cup: Final (3p-3 against Glenavon, chocked on my cig during the penalties)
We're still around -£500k balance and for the second year, the board keeps on reducing the budget wages but so far so good and I'm getting to like these kids.
2010-2011 season is coming up and I feel this is the season where we either start making money (new marketting deal, more fans, lower interest rate) or we fall...
ps: Ok, I don't think anything is out of line in this post but if I'm wrong, point it out nicely would you
Sacked in England
Sacked in Wales
Only a matter of time before your sacked in Northern Ireland.
And that only leaves Scotland and the Republic of Ireland to go. Excellent work!
