Fair enough, Ian. I guess I'm bending the rules a little by allowing myself to look at players listed for transfer/loans (where I can tour) - but I do scout before I decide to make an offer.

In real life Big G, managers will be aware of transfer listed and loanee players either through the media or their scouting network - there is no 'big list of transfer-listed players' as per the player search screen (although technically, on the interweb, there probably is somewhere), so to replicate this in-game we tend to stick with the scouts, flawed though they may be, over the unrealistic search screen.
I've seen some say that using the search screen for loanees is ok, as the scouts don't seem to distinguish between which are realistic targets for transfer and which are realistic for loans, but I've yet to find this a problem, so I stick solely with my scouts.

it depends on your own points of view, I guess.
In Germany, a transfer can only take place, if the player in question is registered on the transfer list of the FA. If he's not on the list, he can't move. There have been a couple of incidents where transfers collapsed because a manager in question forgot sending the fax in question to the FA.
Hence, in that case every manager would know the transfer list and see it, although in most cases when a player gets put on the list, the deal has been already agreed.
Myself, I only use the player search filtered by transfer status if I'm in dire need of a player and there's not enough time to assess others (for example if both my goalkeepers get injured a week before the transfer window ends). Perfectly valid panic reactions, in my opinion, and those players usually are really crap anyway. |

I'd have thought there would be a list that goes around managers, once a month, for them to see who is available ?

Why? Whose interests would it be in to do that? I can only think of the PFA that may make the effort?

** Shudders in shock ** Absolutely not, it’s like a recovering alcoholic saying he’ll just have the one. Hire more scouts and send the out scouring the country side.

I agree on what your saying. Problem with FM2006 is that you can inform other clubs about players you have available for loan or you whant to transfer, but you never receive faxes of other clubs yourself.
Using the search option to find players with expiring contracts is rather unrealistic. Send out your scouts and if a scouted player is available for loan or transferlisted he will inform you.
So for me the issue of loanies and transferlisted players is in the grey area. However, signing a player without scouting him, no way.
As for scouting the rule is SWYCT, maybe for this issue is it should be "search what you could know" and scout the player.

An example of where I found it acceptable to use the search screen filtered for transfer listed players: a massive injury crisis where I had no DC's to play but one crappy reserve donkey. A couple of the injuries were long-term. I had scouts out, but they hadn't brought me back any good centre-backs. So I found some within my budget on the player search, and sent the scouts to look at them, and ended up signing a couple. I honestly couldn't see any other way of saving the season at that point. |

Give you 15 year old boot boy a run, play a striker in defense, play a grey! But never, never, use that screen!! It’ll all end in tears. |
