I'm in my first venture into LLM (Workington from the official challenge) and am still finding it difficult to bring in players too.
In the past season my scouts found a striker that I was desperate to sign and could actually afford so I put a bid in and when I went to offer him a contract he said that he didn't think we had the resources to meet his demands. I offered him a contract anyway... 5 year deal at £550 a week (the most my board will allow), 25% yearly wage rise, 25% promotion wage rise, maximum signing on fee (£28k), maximum goals, assist, and appearance bonus (£110) and a reasonable minimum fee release clause (£225k). What does he do? Turns me down and signs for Conference North Northwich Vics on flat £475 a week (I was on the way to finishing 4th in the conference National).
Another one I just had is trying to sign a player from Eastleigh (not even in the conference south). I declared my interest and the game said someting along the lines of "Workington manager in dream world" and if I end up putting in an offer then surely the bid will be ignored. I put in a bid anyway and the player said he wasn't interested so left it at that.
At first this kind of thing was a little frustrating but I'm getting used to it by now and actually thinks it all adds to the challenge. It's probably a little unrealistic that a Isthmian
prem league player (or the likes of) wouldn't want to go to a team that has just finished 4th in the Conf. National and has just improved their training facilities so that they are now better than his present club's but it's a little quirk of the game that I'm beginning to fall in love with.
