I'm wondering if any of you have had a similar problem and whether or not this should be reported as a bug. I figure that the old LLaMa domain is the best place to ask this, since only sad bastards like ourselves would be trying to sign our own grey players.
I just started a new FM06 saved game, and I have a very meager squad that is in desperate need of depth. If we get any injuries, we're in serious trouble, so I had a look at my under 18 players, and I noticed a midfielder that could be useful as part of the first team on occasion. He is 16 years old but has decent enough stats.
So I offered him a contract, and he said he wanted 45 euros per week for youngster status. He then rejected the offer, citing that the basic wage offered was unacceptable and that he was anxious to sign with a club and willing to consider offers from others.
I have since offered him several different roles and several different wages, including as much as 250 euros per week as a squad rotation player, which is more than some of my first team regulars make and as much as my board will allow me to offer. But he has rejected every offer with the same message in response.
Now, if he's a grey player, he can't sign elsewhere anyway, so what's the use in him mentioning it? And why wouldn't this lad take the wages offered, especially when he keeps saying that he wants 45 euros per week for any role and I've offered him several times that amount? I suspect that this could be a bug, but I'm interested in hearing your feedback. Maybe I'm missing something.

I've signed grey players before, so I don't think it's a bug. I would think that this young man has an attitude problem, and good stats or not, I don't think I'd want him in my squad.

I very rarely sign greys but have never had a problem with it… it could be a bug because he should only be able to sign a youth contract.… When you try to sign him what is you Ass Mans assessment of him? You could always try to sign him as a key player and then break his little heart by leaving him in the under 18’s.

Never had that issue either. That has to be a bug. It would be one thing if he said he wasn't interested in signing but I don't think I've ever seen it where someone wouldn't sign for what they asked for.

Sadly but predictably, there is no other grey player in my under 18 squad worth trying to sign and bring up to the first team. But this has happened straight away, as the saved game started. It was the first player signing I attempted, and I've not had time to treat anyone unfairly or otherwise give this lad a reason for an attitude problem.
What really makes this critical is that my board cancels any free transfer because we're a few hundred euros over our wage bill and the board claims that signing someone on as little as 60 euros per week on a part-time deal would "break" our budget. I've cut the wage bill as much as possible, without trying to transfer out our best player, who we can't really afford to lose.
The whole thing just seems silly, because the only way this grey player can ever have a career in my FM world is if he signs that contract. Otherwise he's with the under 18 squad until he's too old to qualify, and then he'll disappear into nothingness.
