I was offered £1.2m plus a DC for my star midfielder. I sent my scout out to have a look at him, but before the report came back, the offer expired. A shame, because the DC in question was worth ~£2m and was feckin' excellent.

that problem with the whole thing is that you can get scouting reports fast enough. What is needed aside from a revamping of the scouting system is a "priority scout" command so you can tell your scouts to drop what they are doing and get you a report ASAP. While most of the time the player they want to trade is crap, sometimes it will be good, and I've missed a couple deals I would have done had I got the scout report fast enough

Good chance the fellow being touted as trade bait isn't playing so it may be difficult for the scout to get a handle on his abilities in quick time.

Good point! I always seem to either get offered "Grandpas" or "toddlers" (as it were) which can be a tad frustrating as they are either on their last legs or have no career to peruse over to judge them on.
