One of the more popular 442 systems to use is one that implements a defensive midfielder. This offers extra cover in front of the back four and when used right you should find the opposition’s chances are rather limited. This is an extremely useful set-up if you need to keep clean sheets and dominate the game in the midfield areas. The defensive midfielder’s job is to break up play and distribute the ball up field as quick as possible or hold onto the ball and wait until a clear cut pass arises, however holding onto the ball for too long can cause problems especially if he loses possession from dwelling on the ball.
My question: What specific instructions should I give to the DMC for my DM to be effective as described above by Cleon? What would I need to put for closing down? etc
Also, what instructions should i give to my 4 defenders (DL, DC, DC, DR).
I love keeping clean sheets and would rather play a 0-0 than a 3-3 draw. Thank you for your time.
The DMC issue first. It depends on your teams overall mentality and playing style in my opinion. I usually put my DMC's on low closing down (own half, maybe about 6-8 on the slider). This way he will be there supporting your central defence and don't get ragged away of position too early. Of course his mentality should be quite passive too. Its good to prevent him from making forward runs. Maybe on mixed. This way he stays behind and connects the midfield and defence. His passing depends on your teams playing style. If you're playing with counter attacks, then maybe on direct but if you're more in to slow build-up play then mixed / short depending on his attributes and the way you want to play.

My
There are a whole host of threads about this. I for one remember posting suggestions just a matter of days ago. Carry out a search with DMC of defensive midfielder as a keyword and see what comes up...
Thanks Gandelf. Had a good read. A couple quick questions; What mentality should my defenders, dmc, & GK and even midfielders be if i want to focus more on defense>
And what should my defensive line be? Thanksfor the advice?
Finally starting to get to grips with the game but a few things that im finding confusing...
How can you stop conceding goal from outside the box without upping closing down and getting players dragged out of position?
Also I seem to concede an awful lot of goals from weak clearences by my defenders, how do I improve without setting them to direct / long passing as i don't want then to 'hoof' the ball up field when they have time on the ball, only when under pressure?
How to do I defend against general crosses?
And finally... how the hell to I get more of my chances converted by both strikers and midfielders?
DL is where your team starts to defend. if you want your DM to defend i.e close down tackle in your own half set his Closing down proportionaly to the DL i.e a DL of 12 is below the half way line 14 is the halfway line. but i think IM has a big part to play. so e.g DL 12 into ur own half and DM closing down 12 he will in theory start to close down in your half as long as his IM is set right. normal i.e 10 IM means 50/50 if your DMm thinks there is a 50% chance he will succeed in closing down the player he will and if he is set lower it goes up say if he was 18 mentaltiy he would try close down if there was only a 10% chance he would succeed. Decisions etc plays a part too
