That's what Belgium's all about, right? This is my first attempt at doing an update so apologies if i mess up. First season now, two more to come later.
Season: 2005/6
Country: Belgium (Third Division B)
Team: Sprimont-Comblain
Other Leagues running: England, France, Holland on normal, Spain, Italy and Germany on Basic (all with only top division)
I’ve wanted to manage in Belgium for a while, as it has a third tier league, so I put my faith in Frank and he sent me to Sprimont, a small town to the south of Liege. With a transfer budget of 22k soon bolstered by selling a MC for 40k, a 2500 capacity stadium and mid-table expectations, I was ready to go. Allez Les Carriers!
After a cup run was halted by Royal Antwerp (Manure feeder club) and a shaky start to the league campaign, my strikers started banging them in and I found the best position for a SW, DRC, DM, MR on the right of midfield. We were top at Christmas and won the second phase of the league, securing at least a playoff place.
Only Tongeren kept pace with us after that and the lead changed hands a couple of times between them and us. A particularly sweet moment came in my home game against Tongeren where, after a war of words between their manager and me, we stuffed them 5-0! We were level on points with them going into the last game and, with both strikers out , I was forced to play a 18 year old AM/F C up front against a team battling relegation. He got a hat-trick in a 5-2 win, Tongeren drew, and we were up as Champions! The second division awaits…
Third Division B: 1st and promoted
Cup: Out in 5th round
Season 2006/7
Country: Belgium (Second Division)
Team: Sprimont-Comblain
Terrible, awful start to this campaign… no wins in the first ten games due to an injury to my star striker who also got the hump after I tried to give him injections (never again). After he got fit and happy, we went on a mad 11 game unbeaten run and very nearly won the second phase of the league. Unfortunately we got pipped at the post to securing the playoff place by one point despite being in eleventh place at the time!
Sold my 2nd best striker to Royal Antwerp Manure for 400k + 400k over 12 months, and gave youth a chance up front, including Belgian and Spanish U19 internationals. They weren’t great, but we had a decent run-in and finished in 8th, which was beyond my expectations after the winless 1st phase. I brought in a large number of players this season after it became obvious after a couple of games that we were going to struggle. It took them a while to gel, but I’m optimistic about pinching a playoff place next season.
Noticed that there are four professional clubs in the Second Division (including the ‘bankrolled by Manure’ Royal Antwerp who are still semi-pro. They are by far my least favourite team in this country… it pained me to sell my striker to them, but needs must) and they occupied the top four places this season. Seems there is a hierarchy in this league! Someone needs to shake things up around here… rattle a few cages… (grabs a cage and rattles it).
Second Division: 8th
Cup: Out in 5th round (Antwerp again! Grr.)
Season 2007/8
Country: Belgium (Second Division)
Team: Sprimont-Comblain
Not a particularly eventful season… got a training upgrade and have over a million to spend but no one will come to me other than players that are in a lower division or erm, France, so with two new Frenchmen, a decent looking right-footed ML and a few risky young strikers we embark on a new campaign.
High hopes for a Belgian/Brazilian striker signed in the close season are dashed by massive inconsistency. Came 2nd in the 2nd phase of the 2nd divison for the 2nd year running (just seeing how many time I could say 2nd there) and was plodding along quite happily in fifth for most of the season, but fourth is the lowest playoff spot and we were always out of touch with the top four.
Decided to cash in on the SW, DRC, DM, MR in January after he requested a transfer; he went to Mons for a cool million quid. This caused a pretty steep drop in form; we slipped to 8th but recovered to 6th thanks to winning our last three games on the trot after I drafted in some youngsters for experience and give something for the regulars to think about while they’re sunning themselves…
Second Division: 6th
Cup: Cannot get past the 5th round again.
Excellent title .. I worked in Belgium for 6 months about years ago and you title just about sums up the place... Brussels is a great city! ... Oh and you update is pretty good too
