I had a couple of things like that in 01/02. At Napoli, the chairman suggested that some certain Italian centre-defender, with a similar name to a bird-homea, would be a nice signing. Not wanting to get pushed, I sold my best player and invested all my transfer kitty (44 million  ) to get they guy. Still got the boot though 
The other thing was the typical "we think that ... is an invaluable member of the team". Usually a guy that was sitting in the reserves or the transfer list already.  |

Thwo years ago the president of the club Portugal Gouveia have forced the manager Oswaldo Oliveira to sign a very young central defender came from Uruguai.
The manager start a series of complaining about that in the press, saying he needed a defender for the first squad not a unknow youth player.
If you have seen the World Club Championship, that São Paulo wins  you know that without Diego Lugano, the 2º biggest star of the actual squad of the team, we never could achive that championship.
Oswaldo Oliveira is now a 2º degree manager that is managing i don't even know what club.
