After doing a lot of reading of this forum I thought it might be nice to post a brief summary of my results so far with my home town team, Maidenhead United.
I have gleaned a lot of advice and ideas from the forum in general but it is the LLaMa ethos that is most like me, so I chose to manage a Lower League team, and what better than my own home town, struggling Maidenhead.
First season in Conference South was nothing short of spectacular, I have been tweaking my tactics for some time and I finally seem to have got them right. My scout found me some 'useful squad players' to bolster the side. A few jems already in there but with no transfer budget and no wage budget it was laways going to be tough.
A star left winger and superb right winger/attacker combined nicely with a striker signed on a free to propel me to the top of the table and lurk there or thereabouts throughout the season, vieing for 1st place with the dreaded Weymouth. In a cruel twist of fate, my last game of the season was against... Weymouth. Winner would achieve automatic promotion.. my thanks to my top striker, we walk away 1-0 and up to the ECN
Final results: Played 42, Won 29, Drew 9, Lost 4. Scored 77 goals, Conceded 28, and finished with 96 points compared to Weymouths 92. Weymouth also had superior goal difference to me. It was a two horse race all the way. The got trashed in the playoffs by Histon.
FA Cup: 2nd Round Qualifiers
FA Trophy: 2nd Round Qualifiers.
2nd Season in, I was worried about how I would manage in the Conference National. My Scout went out and found me some promising youths as well as a lot of dog sh*t
I put a few ads at the job centre to bolster my training staff and signed 3 guys to help with coaching, and an extra scout to help me with my next opposition, and youth players. My wage budget was a bit better and allowed me to thicken the squad and provide some competition, whilst letting quite a few of the old firm go.
I struggled up and down the league, but with only 1 decent striker things were hard work. Coming up to December a news article appears with regards to a player wanting out. Scout is sent to him, and he turns out to be a real superstar from Watford. Sign him for a few thousand (my entire transfer budget ) and he starts banging the goals in.
Final results, finished 9th, with 72 points, level with Grays but beaten on goal difference. Played 46, won 21, drew 9, lost 16. Scored 67, conceded 58.
My defence was going to need tightening next season...
Close season and I manage to unearth a few rough diamonds, and sign an absolutely amazing striker as my first full time earner
Some more of the chaff let go over summer freed up my budget slightly and I signed another coach. My training facilities were also upgraded to 'Average Facilities' Happy days.
I was confident this season and set about making the league my own. With a larger squad I decided on embarking on a decent cup run as well, more of that in a second.
A diamond of a defender came up trumps and kept my back four in line. A veteran from an ex Prem side slotted in for me at left back and captained my new side.
It was really only a one horse race and I romped the league, promoted with 4 games left to go. My star striker signed from last season had to go, his wage demeands were high, and an astronomical offer from a club in France sealed the deal. Finances secured for the season My new boy this year just kept banging the goals in though, 36 goals in 33 appearances in the league.
Final result, finished 1st with 103pts. Played 46, won 32, drew 7, lost 7. Scored 96, conceded 38.
To his credit, it looks like the last time he posted on T&T was in mid-January, so maybe he's realized his sad ways and come around to the LLaMa way. Then again, maybe he's been too busy cheating his way to the top in his saved game to post on T&T lately.
