Before I saw the error of my ways, it used to be possible to search for text (ie. "free transfer" as I used to do). But yeah, I suppose you could look for the Spanish FLC or the Portuguese scout that way.

i play random anyway. its not much use to me. the players i want to keep an eye on are on a shortlist. Ive ive used it to find players when i know one of particular interest and wanted to find him. I make scribbles of club and player and position i want. in an old fashioned way. and other stuff.
