I decided to start out unemployed, if only for a laugh.
Took me 2 in-game months to land a job at Cefn Druids in the Welsh Premier League. I stayed with them for 3 seasons, somehow landing two titles and a cup along the way.
From there I ventured up to Montrose in Scotland, from where I was sacked for giving the board an ultimatum about training facilities
Now I'm at Derby in the English Championship and doing fairly well for myself. Might even land play-offs come end of season
For me, starting unemployed is the only realistic way to start the game.
What I'll do many times is pick another league's starting point for the game, that way the clubs available will always be different.
For example, in my current game I started with England, Brazil, Scotland, Portugal, Italy, and Spain leagues loaded. I wanted to play as an English manager. But instead of choosing England 2006 as a starting point-which would have begun the game in June I believe, I chose Brazil 2005 as my starting point. This put me right smack in the middle of the English season in Janurary.
I was offered a job by two clubs, Rushden & Diamonds who were 8th in League 2 after a poor run, and another lower English club I can't remember. I chose Rushden and picked them up where the last boss had left off. By the end of the season I managed to get them up to 4th place in the league but lost in the playoffs to Grimbsy, ruining my promotion dreams.
But never the less, I feel that starting unemployed is a real challenge. The only other "realistic" alternative I see is to use the random team generator and just pretend that said team just fired their manager and offered you the job.
True, I don't see an obscure manager getting offered a position with a League 2 club, but the other club who offered me a contract was from Conference South...so it kind of goes both ways.
The holiday option doesn't sounds pretty good. I say go on holiday then go out and grab a bite or something...that way you won't be sitting in front of your computer the whole time! Plus, my idea of using different starting points may be another solution, even one to use in combination with the holiday option.
Either way, I just feel that if we choose a club it is biased somehow. Either we chose that club because they have a nice logo/kit, we have a mate who supports them, you met one of their players once and etc.... there is always a little bias-unconscience or not- when we manually choose a club.
But thats just me. We are all entitled to play the game the way we see fit! I just hate SI for making such a great game! It is completly taking over my life...but who cares, I must get promoted to League One this year!
