Playing as ASA in the Brazilian Third and in my second season as an LLM. Both of my keepers are out injured and I've been trying all week to find a new one with my "build the squad with no transfer funding" kitty. I actually manage to sign one (sold a player, got some scratch) but, even though I have $5k for transfers and he cost $5k, the transfer is cancelled because I don't have enough funds available. Must have been a rounding issue. Match day comes along and both my keepers are still out. The engine didn't think I needed a non-salaried GK (maybe because I finally have enough players to field a full squad plus subs *finally*?) and it won't let me transfer a gray GK up from the reserves.
Might as well have some fun with this. I ask my assistant coach who he thinks should play goal and he puts one of my slightly injured (bruised ribs) strikers in there. *sigh* Looking down the list my whiny midfielder is sad he's not playing as much as he thinks he should be, so I call him over and hand him the GK kit and say "Do me proud, lad" while thinking "This oughta shut the little bastard up". He did manage to stop one shot. We lost 4-1 with all 4 of their goals from beyond 25 yards out (they couldn't hit the net from inside the penalty area). The next day the midfielder has the flu and wants to go home.

I was going to read this, but the title said "don't look now", so I didn't.
Couple of things:
Re: the transfer - if you had extra clauses, the AI makes sure you have the cash to pay them up front, even if they're not due for an unspecified time. Or it could be rounding error as you say - check your financials to see the exact amount available.
Re: calling up a grey from the stiffs - if the game didn't automagically show one in the first team squad, then filter with reserves visible while selecting - you'll be able to pick the grey keeper then, and once he's picked he'll show in the first team until you deselect him. You can't promote one, as you found out.

In OL game, I've noticed AI offering 700 EUR for a player, which is way less than I can offer him. Also, I noticed that if you select reject all offers lower or below, the game suddenly rejects all offers with an exception of AI club offering that amount wihtout additional clauses.
