So there I am with Hereford, cruising along in my first full season with them. I've a strong (if smallish) team - I hadn't signed anybody apart from one loan signing to strengthen my attack since I took over at the end of the previous season. 13 games to go and were one point off the playoff zone. It's been a seesaw season, but we had slowly climbed the table. Morale is up in the squad and our only injury to worry about is my backup left winger. Looking good for the final push towards promotion - dare I say even the Conference title?
Then the wheels come off big time. In one game I lose my first choice goalkeeper, right whinger
andi right full back. No problems - I have cover. We should be OK.
But no. Next game I lose my backup goalie for a month, and one of my strikers for two months. Then in the week between that and the next game I lose my backup right whinger
and backup right full back in training incidents (what are the odds of that?) So, for the next game I have to move my main striker to right wing and one of my central defenders to right full back. I only have one spare central defender (my weakest position). I am right on the wire now.
NEXT GAME - no injuries \o/ But I'm wolloped 4-0 by York /o\. But after the game I'm told that my main central defender is injured in the gym. WHAT THE F*CK IS MY DEFENDER DOING IN A GYM EXERCISING STRAIGHT AFTER A GAME? Don't answer that. It's probably a gay thing. He slipped a disc, apparently. Maybe he's not as flexible as he thought he was. The physio thinks he'll be out between a month and 3 months. Way to go doc, could you be any more vague? That means for the next game I have to move my only spare central defender back from right back to the middle, and then use my spare left full back over on the right. And then, during the week my third choice goalie is sent home with a cold (hah! he can catch something after all).
We managed to scramble a win out of our next game: a fraught 4-3 over my old team, Hucknall. The defence is a shambles, the 17y-o goalie has stage fright, my striker is narked as he's playing on the wing and every loan signing I've chased to bolster my squad have snubbed me. This means that the two spare central midfielders I have who are fit have to play as makeshift central defenders. Or right whingers. Or centre forwards. I don't have any real players in my reserves I can field, and the 2 U18 players are both injured, so I can't field them either (but then I don't need to field left wingbacks, anyway).
F*cking game. Why do I like it so much?
