I played FM2007 a little bit but have never really sank my teeth into the series until FM2008 (or WWSM2008 for us Americans) came out.
My knowledge of Football is pretty limited. I enjoy watching MLS when I get the chance. My Hometown team (Columbus Crew) are garbage but I still hope and pray they do better with every game they play. In England, my favorite team is Fulham. We don't get any of the lower leagues on tv here in the states, otherwise I would be more prone to watch them.
The idea of LLM is intriguing to me. I figure that since I don't have much outside knowledge of the leagues and players anyways, roleplaying the part of a Lower League Manager is going to be easier for me to stick to.
I notice that this area of the forums seems to be a sort of exclusive club. You guys obviously take your play style very seriously. I can respect that and wanted to at least post an introduction before getting too far into this.
I have read the rules and guidelines pertaining to the spirit of LLM and started a game last night. I started out unemployed and waited until some head coach vacancies were shown. I managed to get hired on at Worcester City (Blue Square North) and am in the process of getting my squad ready for their first match.
I have a few questions before I go any further though.
Quote:
Tactics.
Best to start off using a default tactic and altering formations or giving individual or team instructions to players based on the strengths or weaknesses of your squad, and NOT to use other people’s tactics or formations. The idea of LLM is finding out the errors of your ways though trial and error. Pinching other people’s ideas is not the way of the LLaMa.
With my absolute crap knowledge of football tactics, I am going to seriously struggle trying to formulate a decent formation and individual instructions for my players. Would it be permisable for me to study up on real life football tactics in order to further my knowledge of the game? Obviously nothing would be directly pertaining to Football Manager. I was thinking more along the lines of picking up a few books on football coaching.
Another thing I was wondering about is the financial status of my club. I have zero money for transfers and my income is in the red. Is it realistic for me to setup friendlies in the off season with higher league clubs in order to generate revenue? I realise this has the effect of lowering my teams morale when they get stomped by a Premier or Coca Cola League team but the possibility of generating 50k (USD) in a day is something that is looking appealing.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any replies.
Good team choice with Worcester City, I am in 2012 in my save with them and I am enjoying managing them.
In terms of your points:
1. Its all about trial and error based on your knowledge of football, which can of course come from your real life experiences, such as if you played or were a manager. What don't agree with is asking for tips, hints or downloading tatics created by others, so stay clear of T&T forum. As you are fresh to football, it sounds like a good idea to read a few books on football coaching and see if you impliment what you learn in your game.
2. In real life many lower league English clubs try to setup friendlies with Championship or Premier League clubs, normally if they are lucky, they can get just one friendly at home per pre-season. So it would be realistic in the game if you were to attempt to play one of the higher league teams in pre-season,. Alternatively leave it to your assman who often surprises me with the quality and depth of what he can arrange for pre-season.
I doubt anyone would have any objections for using real life knowledge in the game or trying to pick up real life knowledge to be used in the game. Do remember though that because this is a game that what works in real life does not necessarily have to work in the game.
(Certainly in the lower leagues where we are managing we are sometimes already happy when the players can kick a ball)
Conclusion: try to fabricate a tactic that you think is a sensible tactic and then start tweaking it because it will most likely be a lousy tactic
(I'm speaking from experience here )
For arranging friendlies: to avoid any possible dodgy and non-realistic friendlies arranged I just put my ass.man in charge to arrange the friendlies and I'll just see with what he comes up. The occasional friendly I arrange myself are against local/non-league/feeder teams.
I appreciate the warm welcome. I am glad to have found this section in the forums. It seems like there are a lot of like minded people here who enjoy a good challenge.
Tactics - By all means study. It will increase your knowledge so can only be beneficial. Only thing - don't visit the tactics forum on this site, it's very much against our ethics.
Friendlies - Lower/non league clubs do fairly often player big(ger) teams in pre-season friendlies as a means of raising funds, but it tends to be teams in (reasonably) close geograpical proximity. For example, my local team, Newcastle Town (who play in a league three tiers below Conference North) plays local Coca-Cola Championship side Stoke City every pre-season. This generates a crowd of up to 3000 (and has on occasion been more) and the gate money from this sets them up for the majority of the coming season. This has been an annual fixture for over twenty years now.
If you're not sure who is near to Worcester, use a map. There is a football specific one on the internet somewhere, but I don't know the address. Maybe someone else can help with that.

Welcome leftie,
Seems that you are starting on the proper foot...
The vets have certainly added most of the information. Just remember to enjoy the suffering... it's exquisite...
I think Bluemoon and Kriss are also lefties right? we stick together...
