Has anyone ever had a wonderkid come through the ranks on this or any version of fm? i have bought nearly every game and have never had a superstar or even a first team regular come through the system.I usually go my team Liverpool and even though i upgrade my youth setup still no luck! I had a goalkeeper who got into the under 21's once but never made the grade. This is starting to get on my nerves cos my team is full of foreigners.
When you get a new batch of youth player and your assistant says "xxx has the potential to be one of the best of his generation", you have such a world class player.
You can force this to happen by saving/reloading the day before you get your new batch, but some would consider this "cheating".
I only had one World class player/Wonderkid come through my ranks. Peter Garrat on FM 2007.
There is a problem IMO with youth generation which appears to be based on reputation (or weighted too highly) so a lot of the best regens appear at the bigger clubs rather than the "famous" clubs (such as Ajax) who have been famous for youth development for years. This however is different on everyones games and so my experiences will be different from others.
I must honestly say that I seem to be receiving some class regens in this version (08). Also a 'best of generation' right back. I am Arsenal though, and to me reputation seems to important as well. Chelsea for example got some excellent ones as well, as do Liverpool. In Germany the best ones seem to be produced by HSV and Bayern. In Italy a similar situation: Inter, AC Milan and Juve have the best ones.
This is, of course, all based on my scout reports and coach's opinions. They might be wrong, but I doubt that they are, because scouts are really accurate in FM most of the time (especially with 20 on both potential stats).
In my opinion, the regen system is heading closer to perfection every year. Now we need what Alurny mentioned: famous youth academies like Ajax and River should be recognized more.
Only had 2 or 3 players that came through my youth system at Arsenal on FM07 that became world class players. I've played that save for about 22 seasons. There was a good amount of "decent" players though, but not many become really great. However it did take me about 5+ years before the team started to produce players of better quality. I had a lot of players filling up the English U-19 and U-21 in later seasons. On FM06 though I had a whole bunch of quality players coming through. I actually did have at one point a whole English-11 on the pitch with Arsenal, mostly made up by own products.
So far on FM08 I haven't seen much interesting in the youth setup at Arsenal or Marseille. However while I was at FC Twente, they had a good number of players from the youth system that was pretty good and played well for my 1st team.
I've had one, ever, on FM06. Bizarrely I was in the Conference when I got him and he was the only youth player I got for about 3 seasons. He ended up playing for England.... then I went on a streak of 40 games without a win but thats another story
Had a couple come through in 07, got a fantastic striker through called Bobby Callaghan who went on to play for England before he hit 21. The regen system was generally OK in 07, I must say. Perhaps they were slightly underpowered compared to the original DB, but nothing too serious.
Haven't got far enough into 08 to really see what's happening with regens here, but hopefully I'll get a few through.
