Okay, here?s the eye tut I promised meehoo in Mark?s Eye Texture Challenge.

A word for newbies -
1. To select an image on a transparent layer, Cntrl + click layer.
2. You don?t have to follow my settings. Experimentation is the sister of the Mother of Invention.
3. Sorry, but you must have Alien Skin?s Eye Candy filters. ( No, ASEC is not and does not have an eye making filter )
4. TO ALL OF YOU, bear with me. I'm not good at preparing full tutes.

I can?t replicate the eye texture I first created coz I didn?t save the original cloud layer I made. But these are the steps I used. So, like in real life, you?ll have one-of-a-kind eyes.

STEP 1
Canvas size and resolution are up to you. Create your eyeball, iris and pupil on separate layers. Create copies that you?ll work on and use the original so you can accurately select the parts. Some of the steps create irregularities in shape.

STEP 2
Create the iris. In the tool box palette, prepare black foreground and medium brown background fill color.

Select the eyeball image layer. (Cntrl+click layer)

On menu, FILTER > RENDER > CLOUDS. Cntrl + F till you get an equal amount of black and brown.

STEP 3

This is a fave filter whose textures I use as a base to create others - Alien Skin?s Eye Candy SWIRL filter.

With the Eyeball still selected, go to ASEC Swirl.

Whirlpool Setting - 55
Smear Length - 10
Twist - 8
Streak detail - 45
Uncheck Warp / Smooth

Hit the CHECK. Uh-uh, don?t deselect yet.

Doesn?t look like an eye, does it?

STEP 4

The secret weapon ? FILTER > BLUR > RADIAL BLUR. Select the ZOOM blur method .... Amount -95 , Blur Method - Zoom , Quality - Best

I used a strong setting but to have something like my original image, use a lesser amount - say 40.

In case you want to create cross eyes, click in the box and drag the center to where you recon the pupil will be in relation to the cross-eyed eyeball position. Hit OK

Now were getting somewhere. The stronger the setting, a lighter ring band along the edge is created. This is why I chose the eyeball in the first place to create the iris.

At this point, Sharpen the image, FILTER > SHARPEN > SHARPEN MORE to bring out more detail. Use Level controls to adjust color. You can even resize it ( CNTRL + T ) if you want to use the whole image or the center part for your iris or off-center for cross-eyes. Don?t include the band edge.

CNTRL + D to deselect.

STEP 5

Select the Iris layer image. Then CTRL + SHIFT + I to inverse selection and hit DELETE. There?s your Iris.

STEP 6

It?s all retouch from here. Whatever airbrush and paint brush work you do, do it on separate layers so you can play with layer modes, transparency, etc. or delete if you don?t like it

Select the Eyeball image layer and fill with white with a slight tint of red.

The iris has a ring around it. Select the pupil layer image and inverse. With med brown as foreground color, use airbrush with a small tip in low pressure and create a thin ring on a new layer below the pupil layer.

To create the convex illusion, select the pupil image and air brush with a bigger tip size along the edge, again on a new layer above the pupil layer. In the layers pallete, change the layer mode to MULTIPLY and lower opacity to suit..

The inset on the lower left corner shows the effect of the above airbrush work.

With a 2 pixel brush and a light red foreground color, draw the veins on the eyeball . Lower the opacity of the layer to get a softer effect.

A final touch-up. Hit D key to set the default fore and back color. Set white as foreground color

In low pressure, spray one or two dots on a new layer within the iris area (light source reflection). On another layer, spray another longer band below the pupil and change layer mode to soft light. Drag the dots around till you get a desired look.

Sorry, Mark. These must be the longest posts in PSG history.

You can view my new eye created with this tute in the Campfire area.

I hope you can make sense of this tutorial. I?m not that good in preparing and wording a full tute. If there?s problems - HOLLER. I?ll try to explain further or maybe the others can help out.

If anyone could improve on this, you are most welcome. Share your ideas with all of us.

One more thing ? try using other textures as a base. It was the Radial Zoom Blur that was the key in creating this texture.

I would love to try my texture in POSER. But I don?t know how yet. I appreciate any effort on this. Share with me how your attempt worked out, please.

ENJOY!!!!!

Great looking eye Sue and you did a good job on the iris [righton]

Nice tutorial Vee and well documented; great job [righton]
It's going to be a bit more complicated to do your tutorial since I dont have the Alien Skin plugin, but that doesn't stop me from reading the tutorial all over.

vee don't worry about the length.
Good stuff.

vee why don't you see if you can find an alternate solution for the EYE CANDY part though... because it's primary use appears only to be to get the definition in the iris texture. And i guarantee you there IS a native PS filter(s) that can produce that as well.

Sue?!...
Have you got the "Anti-Alising" turned off for your circular selection tool? By the jaggies in your eyeball it appears that way. Why don't you turn it on to get siky-smoooooov lines.
