I see that there in fact already exists a discussion at this board for my 89/90 patch, but as I wanted to give a more thorough introduction to it and tell about the latest updates, I am hereby starting this new thread.
What is this patch about? It is a trip back to English football's bad, old days, before Premier League, all seater stadia and luxurious foreigners totally changed the experience of the game. By extracting these files into your db folder, it offers the possibility to manage English clubs that have their authentic 1989 squads in the game, like Liverpool with Rush, Grobbelaar, Houghton, Arsenal with Merson, Adams, Smith, Wimbledon with Fashanu, Segers, Wise, and so on. Even Maidstone have their full squad as of 1989. All data in the English league have been tried adopted to the realistic settings of 1989; managers and players with their abilities and reputations, clubs with their stadia and kits, even the weather conditions have been changed.
What is new in version 3? The last few weeks I have been trying to add on players in foreign leagues, in addition to repairing a few mistakes in the English league (such as the omission of the great Derek Brazil). Due to the fact that very few foreign players are included in a game when one selects small db, I have added a retain file to ensure that the foreign clubs in question keep their players when you start a game. Some of the major European clubs now have full senior squads, while other clubs that are likely to compete in the European club tournaments are improved as well.
I should also notify that the amount of work to be done for making such a patch is quite large, so there are bound to be a few mistakes. Especially when dealing with players in European clubs, I had to face my shortcoming.
Please do the following when starting a new game
-Do always play small database, in order to avoid contemporary fringe (mostly foreign) players that have not been deleted to enter the English league.
-Do only choose from the top four English divisions, i.e. Football League.
-Do remove the file "init" in the data folder which supplies Chelsea with their sugar daddy.
Hi! You must be the very same Stevenhp1987 as on the Dugout, right?! I have to say I was really delighted by your work when I first noticed your contribution. However, I discovered it too late, at a stage when I had done some other work on the update which otherwise would have been lost if I did go back to the version you added on to. Thanks anyway - for perfection's sake, those co-efficients really should have been it.
Very interesting that you seemed to have restored the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia! That was a matter I didn't dare to involve with.
What happens to English clubs after a few seasons go by? Do they ever enter back in the European competitions?
yes they would do, as co-efficients can change after seasons based on the performances from the clubs. So after 5 seasons I would expect england to once again have maximum places.
I can do it again for this version if you like, not at the moment though because my computer is being repaired, so have no access to an editor.
Brilliant work!! I did a legends patch for myself that took months some years ago on 03/04 so really appreciate your hard work.
How long did it take and why did you choose 1989/90 out of interest?
I would love to do the same with another year maybe from the 60's or 70's
I have no Rothmans year books so will have to hunt them down as that seems the best resource, also found a website "Since 1888 the premiership and football league searchable database" which is awesome and has all the squad lists for every club in every season.
Excellent work have enjoyed FM2006 like I did when I played CM1 for the 1st time
So, you too have been attracted to the idea of playing with players of the past in FM? I know there have been people working on such "legend patches", but I must admit that I personally don't find that concept as satisfying as playing from a concrete historic season. If the game isn't attached to a certain time, it becomes too confusing and random in my opinion.
When initiating this project, I realised that the seasons 1988-91 were the most fitting, as those were the ones when the English League structure was resembling the structure as it is today the most. There was also an option of going back to the time when Premier League was reduced to 20 teams (mid-90s and thereafter), but that would be too close to our own time and no challenge really.
To that I would like to add that I was more attracted by the idea of playing with the likes of Imre Varadi, Steve Ogrizovic and Marco Gabbiadini instead of Zola, Cantona and Ginola; to try to reconstruct a time that now seems so far away even though it's only 17 years ago. A certain dislike for the modern game also had it's influence on me, even though one's doesn't have to be an old grumbler to enjoy this - yet, it helps.
Picking 1989 instead of some season in the 70s was an easier choice when you also consider that it is necessary to insert attributes and abilities/reputations - which is easier when you have experienced that time yourself and remember approximately how it was like. I have to say that I have also relied a lot on previous versions of the ChampMan-series, where many of these players were still figuring.
Actually, I got the very idea of making all this a few years back when I discovered that Imre Varadi (the great Football League nomad) still existed in the database. As a matter of fact, he still is a player in FM06, at the age of 47! Maybe it's meant as a joke from SI, but I try to sign him nevertheless for my teams when I play "regular" FM.
If you undertake such a project yourself, I have to wish you the best of luck. It's great toil and especially if you decide for a season as long ago as the 60s or 70s, even though it would be very interesting indeed to have the possibility to play FM with players from that age.
Absolutely fantastic ! You're a hero to the original players, changing the 3 discs, entering the score as a password.... Memories... I suggested this once on a forum to SI that they produce "era" titles, based solely around the European Leagues, with the major focus being on the English league.. Personally thinks it would be major seller to the "wrinkly" brigade.. Is 40 wrinkly?
Thank you for your work in achieving this file.
