I'm starting with newcastle united and wanted some help arount my tactics.
i genrally play a flat 442 with arrows on right and left mid fielders with them set on attacking and forward runs and high crossing etc. my central midfielders on mixed forward runs and run with ball and them holding. my two centre halfs are very defensive. no forward runs etc,my right and left backs i play in between normal and defensive with mixed forward runs and then i play my attackers attacking.
i play a high tempo, high closing down style of play. i set all defenders to direct passing and all midfielders to mixed and then the attackers to short passing.
i seem to have inconsistant games and its really frustrating can any one help. am i going wrong?
I'd suggest playing a shorter passing game as long as it is not wet weather conditions. You can often give the ball away if you are constantly playing long ball, short passing is more of a possession game.
Try putting all of your out field players on through balls often if you have quick strikers, give your 2 centre midfielders higher creative freedom than the rest of your team (unless you are playing a DM - make him more defensive minded if so with lower creative freedom), give your stronger more skillful striker hold up ball to get more players involved.
About closing down, keep it pretty low on your whole defensive line - if your defenders are closing players down and not getting the tackles in then they will constantly be out of position, giving them low closing down will make them hold their possession better and make tackles when it is in their area rather than them going to the ball.
Depending on how the AI play against you, this wiull affect how this tactic works for your team.
The AI defensive 442 is based around a counter attack so your arrowed wingers will be caught out of position on some of the AI attacks.
Against the conventional AI 442 it should do a lot better but as they are very difficult to distinguish you will have to work it out yourself. Very often the AI starts with a defensive 442 then switches the a normal 442 to score a goal after you have scored.
So you could try a variation of this tactic without full settings on formaward runs for the wingers or if you wish to leave that, make sure there is a dm around when they have posession as this covers wingers when they go out of position and gives them time to run back.
