Free Roles ,are they good or bad? opinions please, especially from WWWFan (The Daddy)
Hi guys ,just need some help with players on freeroles.I can understand you giving FC`s freeroles ,but in alot of tactics and discussions lately freeroles have been given to wingers. If the idea is to SPREAD the play ,create gaps in the Defence for you to take advantage of, wouldnt you want your wingers to HUG the touchline and not wander infield taking the fullbacks with them?
Opionions and advice please ...thanks

Only if your tactic is attacking imho, otherwise if you want to keep things tight you want to turn them off so that the player doesn't wander to much (with regard to the wingers at least, on maybe one forward might be ok)

I heartily recommend them for wingers in attacking formations. I use three free roles in my Control tactic, both wingers and FCd. What it seems to do is pull the defence out of position, allowing a playmaker MC to cut it to shreds. As my FBs are on FWR often it also creates space for the overlap if they have cut inside.
However, I wouldn't recommend it if you have a poor side (players need good creative, of the ball and decision making stats to pull it off) so for poor sides stay away.
I also wouldn't recommend it for defensive tactics.

So would it be a good idea for example to put my wingers(Guardado and A.young) on free roles to allow lucas some more room to dictate the play?

Slow it donw, give Lucas space (no FWRs), lots of width, lots of depth, short passing and 3 free roles. The football is beautiful at times (as long as you have the personnel),
In one game my playmaker made 150+ passes. Can't see the last figure as it is only a two digit column. He doesn't get too many assists, but his key passes are huge. He plays balls through to the wingers who then set it up on a plate for the FCs.

Since starting playing the way I do now I have Free Roles on both FC's and my AMC. If it is going my way but I can't seem to score that second goal I will put my wingers on Free Role in the second half. I have done this enough to know now if the circumstances are right it is very effective. It seems to put a lot of pressure on the opposition.
What I wanted to say though was this. In my last game away against Aston Villa they went ahead 1-0 on 18mins, I equalised just before half time. In the second half Villa went ahead 2-1. I increased my player mentalities by one click and changed width from narrow to normal. I pulled one back in the 80th minute to 2-2. Gerrard got injured and had to go off on 85th min. Put Garcia on to replace him having more or less resigned myself to the draw. While making substitution I am thinking what can I do to stop them possibly scoring a winner if they go 4-2-4. Decided to try something really radical and put everyone but the GK on Free Role just to see what will happen really. Result was we scored on 90th min. Final score Aston Villa 2 - Liverpool 3.
I don't suppose for a minute I could do this in every match but as a one off it worked and also confirmed for me that the Free Role has a lot to do with pressurising teams rather than having players running about doing whatever they feel like.

Thanks all for your thoughts,I shall give them a try out on my wingers and see how my attacking MC performs.
Following on from your post Bluesjunior regarding doing something completely new and diferent i created a formation to play against the AI`s 424.It was so good that in about 15 times it was played the AI only scored once and 4 times even had to revert back to a attacking 442,I even managed to score from it 3 times!
I was so impressed with it was going to mention it here ,but the AI has scored 2 late goals against it recently, back to square one again!
So to round off what your saying I think ANYTHING different that the AI hasnt seen before should work in your favour ,like your all out freeroles
Thanks again Sam
