If you look at some of the best players ingame with 20 freerole( KAKA f.eks) they also got a low value in positions.
I think when u mark the freerole option for a player - hes placement(position) on the pitch is determined by hes freerole stat, and not the positions attribute.

i allways play a striker , usually the lfet one on a free role , give him short passing and much creative freedom
every season he is my top goal scorer ...the best player for this position is kevin doyle
in my single player game and online clan game he scores a goal a game
