Firstly, I think I there is a lot of criticism surrounding this latest Football Manager. I however, have enjoyed playing the game nonetheless. I find that because there are problems with the game-play in some aspects, playing as a smaller club is better because there are lower expectations and it is more acceptable to lose (when you are pre-determined to lose) with a poorer club rather than a Man United.
With that said, I took over Derby several weeks ago. Not a massive club, but not terribly small either. I obtained promotion in my first season and came 5th in the premiership in the second season. I’m currently a quarter of the way through my third season with a Champions League spot on the agenda, and a realistic target for me. However, I noticed a problem over the last few away games. We were dominating and giving away very little, but were losing.
Bearing this in mind, I decided to do some research into my season at Derby whereby I wanted to see how many goals I actually conceded compared to some away performance statistics. Although I didn’t score as many as I would have liked, I don’t see that as the main problem. Here’s what I found:
Away MatchesShots – Shots on Target(AI)
Liverpool2-3 (loss)11-7
Fulham4-2 (win) 7-3
Bordeaux0-17-3
Southend3-04-1
Aston Villa 0-25-2
Tottenham 0-27-2
Blackburn 1-114-8
Newcastle 0-26-3
Livorno1-26-3
In total, the opposition had 67 shots, 32 of those where on target leading to 15 goals. Every 2.1 shots at my goalkeeper, I was conceding a goal. I am not a tactical genius nor am have I got the best defence in the league, but I have played this game for 8 years, and I haven’t found this much trouble ever!
Concur from this what you will, but I would be interesting in knowing, are we going to have to play future versions of this game dealing with the same problems, or will adjustments be made?
