I am having problems with players getting dispossessed far too frequently. Generally, one of my players will receive the ball, and then just stand there, totally stock still, while an opposing player will run up to him and just take the ball right off his feet. My player won't even attempt to make a pass or anything, he just stands there and waits to be robbed of the ball and I can't figure out why they are doing this. Obviously, a small proportion of the time, the guy legitimately can't find a pass to make, but mostly there are options open to him and plenty of time to lay the ball off, but the player will just stand there as if he's been momentarily turned to stone, and only comes back to life when the ball is ten yards away at the feet of the opposition striker who has nicked it from him.
The main culprits tend to be my central midfielders and my fullbacks, and consequences are often disastrous (particularly with the fullbacks, as this sort of thing invariably leads to a clear run at goal for the opposition forward). Now, although it happens to me constantly (a couple of times a game mininum), it almost never seems to happen to the AI, so logically there must be something I can do (or need to stop doing) to remedy this.
I've tried setting creative freedom to high (so they'll look for passing opportunities they might not otherwise consider) and low (so they don't get distracted trying to overcomplicate things). I've tried short and direct passing and everything in between. I've tried tinkering with through balls, and messing with the individual mentality settings. I just cannot stop my players giving possession away like this and because I can't figure out the cause, I don't know what I should be looking to change to have an effect.
Sorry for double post - I just wanted to confirm that it isn't just that my players are ****. By way of example, I'm in the Championship with Leeds in 2012, and my central midfield pairing is Lulinha and Wijnaldum; in terms of ability they are absolutely streets ahead of the players they are playing against.
