AS Arapiraquense fans were surprised at the hiring of a Canadian coach.
I was given no transfer funds and an expectation of rebuilding a team which consisted of mostly attackers. Finding a decent defender would be my bane during the first year.
2006 - AA Portuguesa (RJ) - Brazilian Third Division
Hired April 21st.
Portuguesa was relegated from the Rio State Open the year previous. I only had Third Division Games to worry about. This team had a decent defense, but no attacking power.
Third Division - Group 12
5th - P14 W5 D2 L7, 17For 15Agn, 17pts
A decent result, but with no State Championship games I'd be spending 7 months with nothing to do. Received two offers, from a team with only State Championship games and from a team with both Championship and league and a $275k transfer kitty.
This is a decent team with some decent players all around. The Board and fans (all 1100 of them) expect the team to be rebuilt.
Bahia State Championship
5th - P8 W5 D1 L2, 26For 15Agn, 16pts
Lost in the quarter final on 7-5 agg.
Third Division
4th - P14 W5 D5 L4, 35For 19Agn, 20pts
Key moment was last game of the season. We were safe from relegation and playing my old team ASA (who needed to win in order to not get relegated). I won 13-2. Their new coach did not get fired afterwards.
Players In: 5 $550k
Players Out: 7 $1.7M
I do believe this team is funded by a drug cartel or the CIA. I will spend this contract with them, then maybe try to move to a different country IF they will let me. (Oh ya, all leagues & divisions of South American teams loaded).
Oh nice to see someone else try the Brazilian 3rd Division. Damn tough league if you ask me. Good work on the decent team, I ended up going to Argentina. You even got the same 2nd team I did Porguteusa RJ .Yes not having the BSL to start with in team leaves you with 14 games/year + a few more if you get into the 2nd round

I love them!!!
Hey mister.. don't you mess with ASA, you bastard!
I was liking them. Then they fired me. On top of that, their new manager got at least an $80k transfer kitty while they weren't part of the Third Division while I had $0k. They keep popping up to. In 2009 I have the chance to relegate them again!!!
I had hopes for a good season but my players thought otherwise. We were competitive but not stellar by any stretch. With 128 teams in the league you get bombarded with transfer requests, but it's also easy to sell.
Bahia State Championship
4th - P8 W5 D1 L2, 22For 10Agn, 16pts
We lost in the quarter finals on penalties after a 4-4agg. Very exciting games, especially since we were down 1-3 after the first leg. Had a monster crowd of 1108. The fans support for this club is in the toilet and just not growing.
Third Division
2nd - P14 W7 D3 L4, 33For 17Agn, 24pts
Lost in the second round 5-6 on agg. Both were brilliant games, fought down to the wire. The team we lost to made it to the final round but did not get promoted. Our home match had 2500 fans out, away had 4777.
Players In: 3 $300k
Players Out: 3 $700k
I'm bummed about the fan support. Our average attendances over the last two years were 1656 and 1599. Pretty grim considering our stadium holds 30k.
