Getting back to the topic, the difficulty probably lies in landing a safe midtable position every season. It's hard for the club's reputation or yours as a manager to improve if you're getting the same results every season. The key is to somehow get up to the top few spots in the table, simply by getting the best out of the players you already have. The other way would be to put together a strong run in a cup competition. But that is damn near impossible in many cases.
If you think about it, the LLM in real life that get the attention and the job offers are those that don't just avoid relegation and exceed negative expectations. They take a crap club into the promotion playoffs or at least similar success, and that's what draws attention to their merits. Finishing midtable will elicit nothing but a yawn.
