Of the two choices I would definately rather use the screen than stick pins in my eyes. Maybe I am just a sensitive soul. Very fortunately for me the game has not insisted that I must choose between the pins in the eyes or using the screen so I don't do either

Well, blow me down...you can't.
Next example?
When I've used the player search, even when I've asked my assistant to filter out unrealistic targets, I never filter by attributes. I ask my scout to evaluate every single player on the list. It's usually a short list, but I think that's more than fair.
Transfer lists indeed exist in real life, and while you can't filter them by player attributes, you don't have to filter them in FM. You just see the names and send your scouts.

Do you scout every single player? Or just a select few? If you choose just a few, how do you choose them? Just take their name and think they'd be a good footballer?
You obviously open up his profile, and that may contain attributes, which you really wouldn't know.

Guiness,
I think most of us take a two prong approach.
1) Assign our scouts somewhere. Usually the nation you're playing in. As you grow as a club, expand to the region you're in, or the bordering countries if it's appropriate. Scouting competitions should technically work, but they haven't for me in FM 2006 yet.
2) See players in the media or atop league tables, and "Get Scout Report."

Did you read this thread? What you suggest is what happens in the FM LLM world, no debate. However, this thread was a discussion re the validity of using the transfer lists and the Canadian resident makes a valid point.
How would you choose which players to scout from the list? And pertinently would you open up their profile and see the non-masked attributes or maybe you'd look at their positions. Surely a transfer list, IRL, would have names only.

Try reading the posts above, and use your English and deductive reasoning skills to figure out what I'm talking about, perhaps.
wewak is correct, I'm referring to someone using the search screen in FM. It's not feasible for someone to scout everyone on the search screen. Even on those lists, I'm sure players have nothing more listed than defender, midfield, striker or keeper. There's no way it says they're someone who can play centrally, or on one or both flanks. It would say their name, and their contact information, perhaps their basic position. Nothing more.

Playing the devil's advocate; isn't that what the attribute fog of war is for?
If you playersearch for transfer listed players, you only get to see those attributes you could know about. For the missing attributes you need to sent your scout.
In that case the filters are just a way to save yourself from clicking on all the listed players one by one.

Errr No. You should not use the search screen for transfer listed players at all. Simple as that.
