First LLM post – I’m a long time player of FMs that got interested in managing in the basement due to dafuges challenge. I’ve ditched that save due to the unrealism of it re: parent/feeders in English football. A random post (from a llama I think?) diverted me here. Read all the rules, read a number of interesting updates and got inspired. Like it or not, you have a new convert playing properly.
Loaded England, Spain and Italy only (to see if my PC would like it). Fancied getting a sun-tan and headed to Spain where your man Frank was fairly kind to me – handing me decently supported Barakaldo in B2.
2007-2008 – Barakaldo – 2B2
Predicted 8th or so. Having hired the best of a bad bunch of scout applicants, he was duly sent out with the remit to give me only Basque boys – a kind of nod to the system used by that big Basque club. In the meantime I worked with what I had. A couple of players who didn’t appear any good at first glance became consistent performers. A yo-yo season which saw us 3pts from the trap-door in November and a couple of wins from 4th in April ended with a 10th place finish. Annoyingly Mr Scout found only rubbish on his first wander and was gone so long for his 2nd trip he was obviously playing me like a fool as he accepted an offer from someone else and left without reporting back.
2008-2009 – Barakaldo – 2B2
Predicted 8th again. New scout hired but kept recommending me promising 16-yr-olds. Oh well, if I stay around long enough I may see some reward. Season lurched again towards mid-table mediocrity. The board were not happy, the huge fanbase (for this level) were starting to turn and Mr Chairman accepted bids for two of my key performers. A late run saw us make 6th place and to my surprise I was offered a new contract despite 2 or 3 media reports on who was likely to replace me.
2009-2010 – Barakaldo – 2B2
Predicted 8th yet again. Despite good numbers coming through the turnstiles, finances for the first two sesaons ended with a ‘negative profit’ – that’s creative accountant speak that is. A rake of first teamers retired and I accepted some monies for fringe players who had barely featured. This needless greed left me woefully short in most departments and fielding kids in a ‘square peg round hole’ type system. Loss after loss ensued. My scouts, for I now had two, were coming back with loads of reports. However, the only ones affordable and within my wage structure were kids. Needless to say my U19’s were doing well and won their league (great! My assman is a better manager than me). The first team never looked like making 8th and stumbled in a distant 10th. This pleased the board enough to offer me another new contract!!?!?!?! Go on then….
