Board, fans and media all expect mid-table and relatively mediocre cup performances, all of which suit me fine.
League season gets off to a reasonable start, and we bounce between 4th and 12th from August to Christmas. However, I have to sympathise with the fans constant "frustration to convert chances into goals" and splash the cash in January (i.e. 3 free transfers) to bring in a new winger and two strikers. The winger never gets a game, but the new strikers score 24 between them in the last 17 games of the season. With 3 games to go we are 1st, 2 and 1 to go; second on goal difference, and then win our last game and have to wait for Southport's result (a draw \o/) to wrap up the title:

In the cups:
Get through to the 1st round proper of the FA Cup where Swansea beat us 4-0.
Out to Tamworth in the 2nd round of the Sultana Shield and lose to Arlesey in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Trophy.
13 Players in for £0, 2 loans, 2 out for £1k and 6 about to be let go at the end of their contracts.
Next season is going to be long and hard if we don't do well in the transfer market.
2008/9 Blue Square Premier
Board and fans want us to fight bravely against relegation. An hour into our first game and it looks like they'll be right as we are 4-0 down. The game finishes 4-2 and we go on to have strong first third of the season, mostly in the lower reaches of mid-table.
Things get dodgy over Christmas and New Year and we get sucked back towards the bottom 4. However, our (home) form picks up after that, and a win in our last game would see us finish 13th. We lose and end up 17th.

We end up with the 4th most goals conceded, and defence is the priority for summer signings. The board procrastinate and only renew my contract 1 month before the existing one expires, which has me sweating for a bit.
We fail to win a single cup game.
2009/10
I told the board we'd do better than last season, and we did, just.
Despite attempts to strengthen the back line (in the region of 10 defenders signed close season), the goals against column was the one that did for us (that and no wins from mid-January to mid-March). The contrast between home and away form was also disappointing.

We won two games across the three cup competitions, slightly better than last year.
