Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I don't think it is ever OK to slag people off or talk down to people. Someone has obviously upset you. I don't know for which post or whether it was fair. If you think it unfair, there are official channels you can use to complain.

I think we all accept that many people have stuggled with FM07 and that errors and fluffed chances are the standard 2d representation of this struggle. What we don't accept, and have proved, is there being no way to counter this. You see frustrating defending. You vent. I see frustrating defending. I try to work out why it is happening. My assumption is: the match engine is not so flawed I can't do something about this with logical tactical thinking. Your assumption is: the match engine is flawed because my tactic has been working up until now. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Teams are doing something different against you. Work out how to beat it. The clue is: it's the small teams you are struggling against .

Therein lies the problem. Yes, the game has elements that are unrealistic but these are solvable problems.

It boils down to approach. You can blame the game for cheating, you can accept that these things happen and let it slide, or you can assume it's something wrong with your set up and change it.

The first option leaves only one logical option: stop playing.

The second allows you to keep playing, but will leave always short of your potential.

The third means you find answers and these things happen far less frequently.

The other thing is seeing what happens on the pitch better. A mistake is not always down to being rubbish, it can be down to being put in an impossible situation. A poor backwards header is always annoying, but what if the guy had no other option (which is often the case when it happens to me). You need to do something to avoid putting error prone players in situations where they can make an error.

wwfan has said it before: there's a massive difference between those who look at the game holistically (i.e. don't see individual incidents only and view it as part of a the game as a whole) and those who dwell on specifics and emphasise the more obvious events at the expense of the real game defining factors.

I find it quite insulting that anyone who offers an alternative view on things is immediately slagged off. It's quite pathetic. We listen to your grievences, you listen to ours. It's only polite.

Regarding having instant replies it seems to me that the AI often switces it's tactics against you after going one behind. eg (this is a hypothetcal situation based on how i think the AI might approach the game):

I am Blackburn in midtable. I play at home to Spurs who are perhaps in 5th. Spurs are the stronger side but are away, nevertheless they are favourites.

The AI Spurs manager is not quite sure whether to play a traditional away game and play for the counter-attack or play slightly more attacking and direct. Lets say he decides to play the second option.

I personally am at home and so play fairly attacking and aim to control the game to a degree. Since Spurs ar playing a bit too direct I have the lions share of possession and territory. I perhaps go ahead after 20 mins and Spurs just arn't in ther game.

So instantly Spurs go for a more defensive setup realising they are getting nowhere. In doing so they draw me in and score on the counter 5 mins later. I am annoyed, but perhaps I should have slowed things down a bit and guarded against the counter after going behind.

After half-time I change my approach slightly and they then go ahead. It is likely here that they simply got a better team talk.

There are generally solutions to the most common complaints we hear on the forums about super-keepers, cheating AI's, comebacks and the 4-2-4 etc. However I must accept that for certain key problems it is almost impossible to find their source and thus solve without spending a ridiculous amount of time reading articles and watching full matches. This is where the game is SERIOUSLY FLAWED but we have to accept that.

I think it is a good reflection of how much we love this game that we complain about it's flaws so much and wish for them to be rectified.
