Also worth considering is the fact that noone else has found a 'super tactic' yet - so you may want to first approach tactic making from the point of one or a combination of these approaches
a) whether you should make home and away tactics
b) whether your tactics should be based on your particular teams strenghs
c) whether your tactics should be based on the opposition's tactical strategy/strenghs
Amongst other appraoches of course.
Good luck

I feel the same way... I always make my own tactics using my managerial knowledge and ability and I must say, I have been quite efficient. But theres always room for improvement.

Actually the default tactics work. It is best to build from there with tweaks and save it as your tactic when you have tweaked to your satisfaction. The default settings would have 70% of the things right. You need to correct the remaining 30% by adjusting according to home/away, players, opposition/ pitch condition etc

I don't see using other people's tactics as cheating, but I don't like using them...there hasn't been one that fit they way I like to play (at least not one I've stumbled across) for several years. However, I have learned a lot from from having a look at them and playing a few friendlies or playing the same match over and over and over using different tactics to gain a better understanding of how the match engine factors in the various slider settings. I do not consider that cheating. "Real managers" (as if anything in FM approaches "real") are able to learn from each other in many ways. In addition to outright stealing of ideas from each other, they have various forms of training as assitants, coaches and as players, exposing them to a variety of approaches, tacitcs and training systems. I see nothing "cheating" in picking the brains of other "managers." The AI managers have this process programmed in.
I have made some tweaks and modifications to my tactics/formation over the years. Some of it has come from good ideas from others (barrows on DCs), most of it has come from the experience of playing the game and the changes of the match engine itself (used to play high line and trap, now reg. line and barrows on DC).
Other people's tactics, especially those hailed as top tactics (or now that I think of it lousy tactics) are excellent learning tools. I don't think it is cheating if you use them...how can you cheat in a game you are playing with your self...it is like cheating on yourself for masturbating with your other hand!?!? I don't care to use others tactics because I like mine better...not that they ARE better, I just like 'em.

Rafa Benitez openly admits he is a massive fan of Arrigo Sacchi's tactics used by his Milan side of the late 80's and early 90's. His whole defensive outlook is born of Sacchi's ideas, so is he cheating ??
To me there is nothing wrong with using other peoples ideas and tactics - but it is much more enjoyable when you implement them along with some of your own ideas
