There are some other threads about difference between MLs and AMLs, do a more thorough search.
This is reflected irl as well. Beckham plays on the right, but he's an MR, not a AMR. He can't dribble, no pace, etc. Several factors that affect whether a player can play in both roles. A ML has more defensive duties too because AMLs are further up the pitch so they take on a more offensive role.
Another way to test this if you're not convinced. Make a flat 4-4-2 and look at your ass man's team report. Presuming that you have a natural ML and a natural AML who's better than the ML, your ass man would still choose the AML even if he might not have natural or accomplished for the ML role.
And turn the table again. Make a 4-2-2-2 with AML/AMR. Your player would choose a player with the capability to play AML/AMR, even if you may have a better ML but he does not have a rating for AML.
