As the topic says, what would you like to see tactics-wise in future editions of the game?
Personally, I'd first and foremost would like a lot fewer steps on the sliders that go 1-20, but also make the "sliders" that currently have three steps (Run with ball, forward runs and the like) to have more – 5 to be exact, which would be quite enough for most of the sliders on the tactical screens.
A more blunt slider system would make the tactics more reliant on the individual player's playing style as determined by PPM:s, positional competence and attributes instead of slider-tinkering, and it also seems a little more realistic to not to be able to tell each individual player exactly how attacking you want them to play.
Another big thing is more feedback on the settings. Currently, there's really no way to tell how you've actually told the players to play until you've employed the tactic for a few games.
An improvement could be as simple as a smiley next to the player's name on the tactics view to indicate how well the instructions fit his attributes, e.g. telling Jamie Carragher to play as a really attacking and creative forward wouldn't exactly give a happy face, whereas Ronaldinho would be quite upset if he'd been picked out as a centre-back. If the smiley-thresholds could be adjusted as one sees fit (through xml or whatever), and if players respond when the tactics are "too complicated", all the better.
A "preview tactic"-function would be even better, especially if you can select how the tactic will respond to other formations. I'm thinking something like the wibble-wobble screen of old, but without the ability to move the positions around and shown on a 2D-pitch view.
Speaking of the 2D-pitch, the 2D-pitch could be used for an alternative version of the quick tactics-screen, where you have different manager "shouts" available at the top of the screen – basically commands a manager could shout out to the players e.g. "Get the ball!", which would increase the closing down-settings for a certain amount of time (depending on e.g. morale), or "Move up!", which would increase the defensive line and mentalities, "Park the bus!", etc. – commands that basically are quick tactical changes. Too many shouts and you get a red card. Then again, this might clutter the 2d-pitch.
I hope this thread shouldn't have been in General Questions, and if somebody suggests something that's already in the game, all the better, might even work as tactical advice. Oh, and also think of this as a way to make something positive out of perceived faults in the current game.
I also hope this isn't a duplicate thread, only looked a couple of pages back.

I really agree with you on this one. We need less options on the team sliders. What is the point of having to chose from 5-7 different defensive mentality settings? And passing? When it says mixed passing, it should be mixed passing - don't give me 5-7 different options for how mixed it should be, it is stupid.
Mentality slider:
Ultra defensive - Defensive - Normal - Attacking - All out attack
Creative freedom slider:
Very little - Little - Normal - Much - Max
Passing slider:
Very short - Short - Mixed - Direct - Long
Width:
Very narrow - Narrow - Normal - Wide - Very wide
Well, I think I made my point.

How about a level of your teams comfortably with a tactic? For example... if you have a very professional and experinced team, they could start any new tactic with 25% comfortably, and possibly grow 5%~ every game, 1%~ every day, etc.
Whileas a young team will not be able to pick up a tactic perfectly right away, possibly only 5% the first day.
This can also be affected from one tactic to another, for example if you go from a 4-4-2 where you are comfortable with it (90%~) and you switch to a 4-2-2-2 you may only lose 60-70% whileas if you went to a 4-3-3 you may lose all your % or more of it.
Just an idea which simulates real life... players on Chelsea may be able to adjust to tactical changes quickly, but Hull players would have trouble with it!

I want to increase/decrease everybody's mentality/creative freedom/passing etc by the use of just one slider (for each category), even if everybody has individual instructions set.

A better link between training and tactics. In the lead up to a game, you could name the team your planning to use in the match with a tactic your planning to use and see how it fares in an 11 a side training match.
Maybe you could get some feedback from your coaches / ass man on how successful (or not) the session was
