It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Galatasaray 4-2-3-1 Theorem

Hi all

Very recently started Galatasaray Thread on Good Player & Team Guide forum.

However, I´ll try to describe my tactic/formation point of view, including most individual instructions. I hope you can discuss pros & cons and I guarantee more insight as season goes.

Team

I´m still on transfer period so some names could change but normally this is my first team * substitutes between ( ):

GK Mondragón
DR Haspolatli Cihan (trying new righ back)
DC Rigobert Song
DC Stjepan Tomas (Asik Emre)
DL Ak Orhan (Oztorun Ferhat)
MC Akman Ayhan (Jurichi Inamoto)
MC Tugay (Topal Mehmet)
AM R Hasan Sas (Sarioglu Sabri)
AM L Marcelo Carrusca (Turan Arda)
AM C Sasa Ilic (Ates Necati)
ST Hakan Sukur (Umit Karan/Kabze Hasan)

Don´t know if you have read my old threads (some are on Tactic Bible) but they all complete my approach: Altough I´ll write here my thinking about way to suceed, I´ll post some examples (if you don´t mind):

Rule of two: D-Line, CD and Marking
[Mentality] Adjusting sliders in 4x4x2 diamond
[Theorem] Mentality vs Passing + Attributes

Galatasaray have good attacking players so I´ll try to create an offensive formation in a way to adapt better players. I use 4x2x3x1 with AM R, AM L and AM C, with no arrows like rest of the team. When want more attacking approach just set forward runs and individually slider for what I want. Combined with that three players, 2 MC´s (no DMC on my tactic) and a ST (target man) in 2 ways: with Hakan Sukur, I set him to keep ball, wait midfielders and pass style is aiming for heading; with Umit Karan, instead, I set pass to the feet or run onto ball.

Mentality

GK Mondragón (1)
DR Haspolatli Cihan (5)
DC Rigobert Song (3)
DC Stjepan Tomas (3)
DL Ak Orhan (5)

I want defense deep because my players don´t have much pace and prefer to defend a bit narrow, retiring opponent space.

MC Akman Ayhan (10)
MC Tugay (10)
AM R Hasan Sas (14)
AM L Marcelo Carrusca (14)
AM C Sasa Ilic (14)
ST Hakan Sukur (17)

My explanation follow some predicades:

Mentality [1-20]

1 = Ultra Defensive
2 – 6 = Defensive (5 sliders)
7- 14 = Normal (8 sliders)
15 – 19 = Attacking (5 sliders)
20 = Ultra Attacking

Example:

# Defenders (RB/LB/CD – forget sweeper for now)

# Offensive midfielder (AML/AMC/AMR)

[13-14]
It´s the opposite of DMC position, so you can recognize mathematical difference. Now, just a tip that can be adaptable to DMC: if you´re loosing and [14] is too low for an AMC, then you have 2 options: set FwR often or simply design forward arrow for FC/ST position. Results brilliant.

So you can recognize i´m not very apologist of Rule of Two, neither other theorem (by wwfan) where individual mentality are separated by 1 slider and even Global mentality (we have individual instructions, so use them).

Now, let´s talk a bit about Closing Down

Like in real life, most team try to gain ball near flanks. When you closing down a player at the center, he have the possibility to pass left, right, down or up the pitch. Now, when he is close to line options reduced. That´s when you must take ball from opponent. This way, I set more closing down for AM R, AM L, DR and DL. Again, take a look at my individual instructions:

Closing Down

GK Mondragón: 2-4
DR Haspolatli Cihan: last notch of mixed
DC Rigobert Song: rare (around 4)
DC Stjepan Tomas: rare (around 4)
DL Ak Orhan: last notch of mixed
MC Akman Ayhan: first notch of mixed
MC Tugay: first notch of mixed
AM R Hasan Sas: first notch of high
AM L Marcelo Carrusca: first notch of high
AM C Sasa Ilic: first notch of mixed
ST Hakan Sukur: last notch of mixed

Now, I´ll conclude for now telling I have "plan B". When facing worst team (or needing scoring)I may try to adapt 4x2x3x1 formation: change AM R, AM L and include 2 forwards in FC position, at both sides. Other option is setting forward arrow to AM R and AM L but player can be ineffective. New formation will be:

Plan B
* mentality between ( )

GK Mondragón (1)
DR Haspolatli Cihan (5)
DC Rigobert Song (3)
DC Stjepan Tomas (3)
DL Ak Orhan (5)
MC Akman Ayhan (10)
MC Tugay (10)
AM C Sasa Ilic (14)

FC (left) Umit Karan (16)
FC (right) Kabze Hasan (16)
ST Hakan Sukur (18)

Hakan Sukur, better playing at centre because of his heading/jumping stats. I must tell that diference in mentality sliders don´t disturb fluidity of the game. Give it a try 1/2 games playing at extended highlight and you´ll see.

Finally, my frindly games results (all played full or extended time):

Croatia Zagreb 0-0 Galatasaray
Celtic 2-2 Galatasaray (won 4-0 on penalties)
América (Mex) 2-1 Galatasaray
Galatasaray 1-1 Panathinaikos
Benfica 0-1 Galatasaray
Galatasaray 2-0 PSV Eindhoven

I´ll keep in touch because need to add more insight about individual passing instructions not forgetting set pieces and all other stuff. If wanted, i can post later all Team/Players instructions or upload tatic.

Cheers

Good thread Myst. I hope people take the cue and start noticing that unless tactic threads have more information, they're not worthy of staying open.

rashidi1, thanks for your comment

Nowadays don´t have much time to play (1 game/day) and I really prefer to watch full time, at least the more difficult matches: champions league and those vs rivals like Besiktas, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor.

Now, I´ll describe how it was turkish supercup vs Besiktas.

Galatasaray 0-1 Besiktas (87 min.) - full time

Well, unfortunately i lost 0-1 with a stupid goal scored at 87 min. Match was tough and very equal in terms of possession/opportunities. I´d like how my team played with football very fluid, abusing of quick/short passing but trying direct down both flanks.
Referee didn´t help because Besiktas had a opportunity to score in a penalty (Mondragón saved) and my righ back was booked (yellow).

Either way, my team played well, very strong defending and closing down. MoM was Besiktas goalkeeper, so i was a bit unlucky.

Team instructions

Mentality: last notch of normal (1 slider before offensive)
Creative freedom: normal (I set individual)
Passing: first noth of mixed (1 slider after short, but I set individual instructions too)
Tempo: first notch of normal (1 after low)
Closing down: normal (I set individual)
Width: last notch of mixed (1 slider before large)
Defensive line: first notch of normal (1 slider after deep)
Tackling: normal (4 defenders with high, 2 MC´s normal and AM R, AM L, AM C and ST with easy tackling)
Passing style: mixed but changed it, sometimes, for both flanks
Other things like target man, free role, counter attack, all not ticked (box blank)

Formation

Kabze Hasan
(ST)
Carrusca Ates Necati Sabri
(AM L) (AM C) (AM R)
Ayhan Mehmet
(MC) (MC)

Orhan Asik Emre R. Song Haspolatli
(DL) (DC) (DC) (DR)

Mentality/Closing down followed what I wrote on first topic. Creative freedom were low for most players except Ates Necati (AM C) with first notch of high and Carrusca (AM L) + Sabri (AM R) with last notch of normal.

At 2nd half, i made some substitutes:

Kabze Hasan (out) vs Umit Karan

Hakan Sukur, good for playing as target man was injured and Umit Karan wasn´t in good condition (70-80% fitness)

Sabri (out) vs Hasan Sas

Same here. Hasas Sas is very good but came from an injured period.

Mehmet (out) vs Tugay (after suffered goal)

Now, what about set pieces? I´ll share my point of view about defending and later explain for attacking (in a future post).

Set pieces

Free kicks / Corners

GK Mondragón: original / original
DR Haspolatli Cihan: 1st post / 1st post
DC Rigobert Song: mark man / mark man
DC Asik Emre: mark man / mark tallest opponent
DL Ak Orhan: 2nd post / 2nd post
MC Akman Ayhan: barrier / back if necessary
MC Topal Mehmet: barrier / back if necessary
AM R Sabri: stays forward / stays forward
AM L Carrusca:stays forward / stays forward
AM C Ates Necati: barrier / close down
ST Kabze Hasan: stays forward / stays forward

Next games:

Turkish league and just after 1st leg of pre-champions leage against Chievo Verona.

Cya soon

Good thread

also I think having a bit of space between mentality in a 4-2-3-1 is quite a good thing to do becuase it a 4 strata formation unlike the usual 3, so it can help pick holes in the opposing defence

Nice thread

Could you add your options about Forward runs, run with ball, try through balls and cross settings?

And how you choose passing style?

Hi again

After loosing 1-0 against some team on turkish league (again with a goal suffered at 90th min. -> bad luck) i suceed in my last 2 games:

Galatasaray 1-0 Chievo Verona (uefa champions league - pre-eliminatory)
Besiktas 0-1 Galatasaray (vs. rival on turkish league)

Basically, I´m happy with last results and exhibitions. Altough playing a bit risky 4x2x3x1, team is very consistent when loosing ball (nice team work on closing down) and defend very well. In both games i got more possession and create good opportunities. However, my forwards are unlucky to score more goals. Either way, winning 1-0 isn´t really bad (I prefer that than 2-1; 3-2) and those were very important matches. So far, 3 points on turkish league (2 games) and going to reach uefa champions league group (I hope).

I don´t see the point to upload tactic (formation) because I never use same team/individual instructions.

For example, last games changed 4-2-3-1 formation to more attacking approach based on 4-2-1-3. System englobes 3 PL, altough Hakan Sukur played at the midlle (as target man) and Umit Karan + Kabze Hasan played at flanks with a sarrow? to center.

Either way, i can briefly explain standard instructions in terms of mentality, passing, and closing down, for example. But as i said, sometimes used low tempo and more narrow width and during game changed few things. I like to play full time, most of important games and others for turkish league prefer to watch extended time.

Finally, my last matches were just fine:

Galatasaray 1-1 Fenerbahçe

After won vs Besiktas (other rival) faced some difficulties against Fenerbahçe.

Galatasaray 1-0 Bursaspor (3rd place)
(6th place) Denizlispor 1-2 Galatasaray

After played 5 games, I´m 1st at turkish league with 10 points, ex-aequo with more 4 teams.

However, good news at uefe champions league - pre-eliminatory:

Chievo 1-3 Galatasaray (2nd leg, after winning 1-0 at home)

This way I joined champions league groups and luck gave me: Liverpool, Lyon and Sporting.

Next game: vs Lyon at home

I´ll keep it updated. Feel free to ask questions. Cheers
