It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Right on the money. You don't have to tinker every five seconds and tweak endlessly. You just need to know how to repond when things change. In most cases, if you have a great squad and set up the game right, you won't need to.

Then go buy FIFA07. You don't even need to think.

It's amazing to me, really. I've played about four careers over the past seven months or so. My current one is with Darlington FC. Eight games into my third season and I'm holding down first place, though my goal for season three is securing a playoff spot. I don't sit and tinker for hours. I've certainly complained about certain aspects of the game, and struggled to figure out tactics for awhile. Finally I just downloaded a set that worked pretty well, but with some tweaking has made my team very good, not to mention a few key signings. It's not *that* much work. </BLOCKQUOTE>

I don't want to buy FIFA I've enjoyed this series from when my brother first bought it when it was Champ Man 2. The whole game has improved loads since then but the tactics changing and tinkering isn't fun for me. I like to sign good players or train up young players. I like the challenge of getting poorer teams up to the Premiership and doing well as i have done in all the other versions of this game. This game is like having another job when all I want is some fun. If I wanted to analyse and interpret things to the nth degree I stay at work!!!

As for downloading tactics I had a set that worked for 1 season and a half but I still lost even though I dominated crap teams. Whenver I play Arsenal my team either don't turn up or they dominate as before and Arsenal score off one chance. This has nothing to do with composure etc as my strikers are as good if not better than theirs and it's happened too many times to be poor tactics, fluke, being unluck etc.

How about Soccer Boss? There's a managing game to reminisce over.

I remember when I programmed a random-ish football results system on my ZX Spectrum. I was only about 7 or 8, and each team had a certain percentage chance of beating another team and the results were calculated. My little brother and I used to play our own little F.A. Cup using this program I designed. What's the relevance of this? Exactly, but this is where this thread is going. Can we please get a little more constructive and stop complaining? 'Twould be a decent thread otherwise...

Higgs, you're not listening, my friend. You don't have to do anything to the "nth degree." It isn't that much work. Why do you keep ignoring that?

DL a simple tactic set, like wwfan's, and the tinkering is minor! Of those handful I mostly only use two, and the only real changes I make during a match will be to adjust the overall mentality of the team, the depth of the line, sometimes the creativity or tempo and passing style.

I've got a league 2 team in its third season holding at 2nd place in League 1. I've gotten through slumps and the like and a few hard losses. I haven't had to treat it like a second job. You're way overstating it and sticking to your guns and ignoring the hordes of folks who just don't experience the global level of difficulty you're ascribing to the game.

It's not nearly that much work, I'll say again...

Agreed. Anyone finding it to be too much work or too much like work is tinkering and tweaking too often.

If you're tinkering too much then something is wrong

i've found that cleon's thread on tweaking to be the most useful in playing this game. it's not whether to tweak, but rather when to tweak. if things aren't going right, or you have a feeling, then be a manager and make a logical change. or make an illogical one and watch the ai mull over what to do next.

fm07 is by far the most responsive in this respect (except for those matches where time flies). i only need one base tactic, from which derivations occur during each match.

obviously there are flaws in the engine, which even fanboys agree (unless those guys really give oral). the flaws however do not make the game unplayable. i admit that at first (the first week or so) i did take a beating from this game. even when i tried to apply my general football knowledge to tactic making, this really was not enough. and fm06 literally dumbed down my own tactical strategy (i mean on that version, i could make substitutions for the sake of doing so rather than as part of a plan).

for anyone being defeated by this game, when someone says it's down to your tactics, they really mean it's because of your tweaking strategy. any tactic should give results (within reason). knowing when to tweak can be what many have not recognized, just ask rafa or mourinho etc.

i totally agree with hendoc. There is no point in buying a game and it's too too easy. But i have to say that there are some frustrating aspects of the game. Let me tell you my story:-

Fm 06 became to predictable, boring and easy so i decided to give 07 a serious go. I'm crystal palace and i got promoted to the premier league in my first season and every since then the game has been a completely frustrating experience to the point where i was on the verge of taking the cd out of my computer and put the disc and the box in the bin. The only reason i did't do it was because i liked the updated features of the game but when it came to the matches, it was completed frustration with it many flaws and no matter how hard it got, I still wanted to play it because i seriously thought that i was one tactical adjustment away from success. I tried to change tactics for every match but the players just got confused all the time. So I just decided to play with one tactic - win or lose because it's my belief that if a team is to be successful, it has to win and lose with a tactic, so i made my own solid tactic. Since then i've had loads of success but it still has it's frustration. So in my opinion it's three main steps to success.

1) Make your own tactic
2) Give the players time to adjust and get used to the tactic no matter what
3) Be prepared for the re-ranking aspect of the game between december and january

I hope it helps people
