In fairness, though, Civ4 is not really trying to be an accurate portrayal of world history, whereas FM sort of has that in mind.

Nonsense. They're both a simulation of alternate historical possibilities. Every iteration of the Civ series has had foibles and strangeness, the point being to build a massive empire, and with the idea that the world will react realistically to your input.
FM2007 is no more a portrayal of the real world. It's a fantasy played out. "If I were in charge, blah-blah-blah..."
People just expect too much from the game. They want it to be realllllly realistic, but they don't want to have to work at it, they want it to be absolutely "bug-free" (retracted, but weakly,) and yet they want to be able to take Weymouth to the Premiership and the treble in 5 years.
It's a game, and a damn good one. People who want to focus on the parts of it that haven't worked as well, with which the patch has helped, are majoring in the minors and letting it destroy a very good gaming experience.
It's one thing to say "I don't think this works, and we ought to fix it in the patch, or for FM2008." I've done the same, possibly in this very thread.
It's quite another to go about saying "This game is total S*** and everyone who thinks it's good is an idiot and I'm NEVER going to get another version of it and it's my potty and I'll cry if I want to!!"
Some of that is what you're seeing in this here thread, and it's waaaay over-the-top, IMNSHO. </BLOCKQUOTE>No, I'm not saying that FM is a portrayal of real life, what I'm saying is that it's based far more in the real world than Civ is based in 4000BC or whatever. Therfore when FM makes glaring omissions which spoil the fun of the game, people start complaining. Unjustly in a number of cases, but it's still the same. Manchester United finishing bottom of the Premier League is more unacceptable than the Zulu conquering the world.
Both are games, and both are fantasies, but FM tries as far as possible to bring in things that real managers can do. No world leader ever lives for 6000 years or dictates which way science and culture will go over such grand time scales.
Yes, FM is a fantasy loosely based around the premise of "what if I were a coach", but it's more accountable to the real world than Civ is. That's my only observation really - Civ can get away with far more BS than FM. It's a relative comparrison.
I'm in total agreement with you - people want their cake and to eat it. Realism: but not changing tactics. At the end of the day, people need to work out what elements of real life they want, and which ones they don't. I'm guessing most don't know.
