It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

This is probably only my 2nd post but only because I feel I can contribute to this conversation.

I think everyone reading the above posts will agree and disagree with every single one of them.

We see it in real life, teams attack and attack and attack and suddenly end up losing from a solitary shot on goal from a poorer opposition. WWFan is a man who clearly knows his shiznit and as someone who has grown up with SI games right from CM2 I'm nothing but impressed with the evolution of the game. There is no way that it will completely replicate a real life, if that were the case I'm sure most of us whould be in Football managment.

barcelonafc2005 and CrazyHorseLegend both have valid points because the amount of time I've been watching my own team capitulate in the last 10 minutes after the opposition change their tactics and I don't adapt to the situation. Its gotten to the stage where as soon as I see them change, bang I make changes. Changing D-lines, mentalities and changing from short to direct passing is one thing but you've got to remember the players you're dealing with.

Speaking from experience one of the main things that you have to take time to look at are the mentality stats of your players (especially your defenders). Yeah they may do the trick in the first half and things may be going well, but when the pressure is upped then your mentaly weaker players become totally inept. Composure and Decisions will always have a bigger affect on your defensive players than your attacking players as one mistake in your defence, and thats you 1 nil down. With this in mind I will always have a pick a defensive player for my bench who's decision making and composure is high (obviously he's on the bench becuase stats and performance wise the players starting are superior). This would be someone like a David Weir, Christian Dailly, Sami Hyppia.

Hope I've been some help; as we speak I've just been shafted 3-2 by Southend (I'm Charlton); nothing like FM Irony...

@NJTRAF

I understand what you're on about but you won't beat a bottom of the table team with the same tactic you use against a top team, simply becuase they come at you differently(smaller teams will park the bus, bigger teams wont) - against a lesser team try giving more players TTB for example, more FWD runs etc. up/lower your D-line etc.

But the comebacks are a bit stupid, yes they can be avoided but the 4-2-4 is generally switched to far too early in a match - I have seen some teams adapt it from half time when losing which is ridiculous, and it is too effective, I developed a good system to counter it but even if a lower team uses it, it means that a top team has to play direct football, when IRL this would not always be the case for example IRL Man U would just play keep ball, but if you played that on FM you would get murdered lol.
________________________________________________

So the game does have its bugs etc but it is still a very good game, and no I do not spend countless hours on tactics I just develop a solid system then make appropriate quick changes like D-line, mentality, FWD runs, TTB, farrows/barrows etc. I am saying this to show that you don't have to spend hours upon hours developing and tweaking tactics to be successful

Thanks Aston but the problem is I have a good 15-20 preset tactics for every situation i could encounter, i experiment with this for the last hour or so in a match against Chelsea using EVERY one of my preset tactics then i downloaded some that WWFan had submitted to see which got the best results. So far the best result i've managed is a 3-2 loss with my "442 Balance" tactic i created as Darlington on an earlier game. Worst i managed was a 5-1 loss using my "3412 Attack" tactic. This makes me think either i'm missing something here or i CAN NOT win this game no matter how many times i try. I tried all in all 31 Tactics and never won, or even drew, once

Are you using one tactic for the entire match, or using a tactic set? For a start, 15 is far too many presets and would take your team forever to get used to. The best thing is to have three-five (plus maybe a couple of extreme attack and defend solutions) based pretty much on the same tactic, just modified slightly to each situation.

Trying out so many tactics in such a short space of time won't help you either.

If you go ahead, have you tried a variant to wind the game down and eventually kill it off? Or if you go behind and your tactics aren't getting forward enough do you have a more attacking option?

I don't know how you play it, but the inference from your post is that you play the same setup for the whole 90 minutes, which is asking for trouble since clearly the AI is out manoeuvering you.

at the end of the day (sorry, hate that phrase) theres ALWAYS gonna be unhappy people...the game, in its essence, takes alot of time to get the tactics you want and the tiniest tweak can make the biggest difference in a match...of course its not completely realistic, its a simulation!!! if all the stats for players worked exactly like their written then certain players would getting 10' every match, we know thats not true in RL...you have to expect that all the aspects of players in the game are used as a guideline to the players potential, not a dead cert of how the player will play every game...some things are frustrating in the game and maybe these frustrations will be sorted out in time, but you can appreciate the fact that the games always trying to move forward and is still, by far, the best football sim out there...the random events that have been imlemented in this version are what people were complaining there wasnt enough of...the game is a challenging, therefore frustrating, experience and the challenge adds to the satisfaction when you manage to get one over on your local rivals

my disc has come out of the drive back into the box and into the bin waiting for collection from the dustmen, being continually kicked in the nuts by a game is not my idea of fun...back to civ4 and a decent well thought out game.

Lordy, lordy... this place is full of drama queens! :p

If you don't want to figure out the whole thing yourself, find a tactic set (wwfan's is great) and learn how to use it (a few good playing sessions should be enough.) Learn how to find your feedback and use it. Set up training schedules and check them weekly, tweaking them depending on the general results you're getting.

Tactically, don't make huge drastic changes, just tweak the tactic set throughout the game. Having really good success. Yeah, there's the occasional wacky result, which I hope they'll fix, but it isn't nearly so bad.

It's unbelievable what people expect from a freakin' computer game...
