wwfan i'm not criticising your approach to the game, in fact i have openly aknowledged your efforts to bring clarity on the tactical details of the game. I'm just saying that a game which prides itself on realism has a very unrealistic proble at its core.

Every variety of every game throughout history has required a certain amount of effort from the participant for he or she to acquire proficiency in said game. It so happens that FM07 requires you to hypothesize a set of tactical ideas, analyze their efficacy and synthesize the results in order to achieve tactical success. If that is too demanding for you, and to be quite honest it doesn't take expertise in the scientific method or Hegel to be tactically proficient, then there is an entire back catalogue of SI games that may be more to your liking.
I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence, and I merely want to point out, on the backs of hundreds of other similar rebukes to those who decry the game's difficulty, that you get what you put in. WWFan and the other innovators of his ilk are successful, not out of innate ability (no offense meant), but because they work very hard at the game and test, and test, and test. If you want leisurely entertainment and success without effort, play CM 01/02, and stop peppering the forum with unreasonable calls for the overhaul of the match engine.
More to your initial point, sometimes even the best tactics yield to bad luck, and I doubt the scenario you've presented is a frequent occurrence. It's okay to be frustrated by that, but there is no vengeful old testament god doing this deliberately to spite you, nor is there some cabal of gamers laughing at your misfortune. The game is challenging, and your challenge is to master it.

I realise you are not. I was just trying to clarify how little testing I have actually done. I don't see the problem being anywhere near as serious as you do. It has flaws, but not major ones. @ CrazyHorseLegend: Let me hypothesise (it's my thang, after all).
You are playing a high d-line, quickish tempo, tight marking. Your DC has lost his man and is forced to make a quick decision about a ball played towards him. He can only just reach it (difficult to see in 2d). He heads the ball, but fails to connect properly and gifts the opposition striker (on his shoulder due to tight marking/high d-line) an easy chance.
Lower the d-line and loosen the marking and he will deeper and away from the stiker, so his defensive headers wil be under less pressure. Evn if he does make a mistake, because therstriker is not on his shoulder, he will have time to recover.
You may disagree, but that is how I see it.

wwfan is right, the game is not as bugged as we think it is.
Yes it does appear to us when we bombard a goal only to lose. So the information we see does give that impression.
But there is no scripting to prevent super tactics, no superkeepers etc.
If you take a different approach and outthink the AI you can overcome these problems.
The AI is not stupid and nor should it be.
If you are winning games then the opposition is thinking we need to change our approach or we'll lose here. So they adapt, but you fall into the trap and continue doing the same thing. So they soak it up and counter you.
The tips wwfan gives are very good, width, pace etc etc they do work. When the opposition try to outthink you then give it back.
When you learn how to do that then the bugs disappear!

With Nuneaton i got promoted from the Conference North using Arteta's tactic, so because it worked so well does that mean it would in the next division? YES & NO.
The tactic is fine but it needed adjustments. The home version was far to attacking and the away version needed to be more defensive.
After two games which i lost i knew it wasn't working so i tried changing myself.
This is what happened since... ] [/URL]
That is a team tipped for relegation.
As each game passes i am no longer underdogs therefore i push my mentality up each time. Now i'm virtually back with the tactic i was using last season.

I understand how you feel mate, however i have just lost in the playoff final for league one two years running, im still perfecting my home and away tatics. I have them about 80-90% right, but struggle against the best teams in my division. Keep at it, the rewards are there, it just takes a silly amount of patience.

To be fair to CrazyHorse, I'm a fan boy and I regularly give and receive oral sex from the guys at SI towers, so he's not totally wrong about those who defend the game.

The thing is with my FM in total i have played give or take, 30 seasons since buying it, which is a hell of alot and i have won almost everything there is to be won on the game but i STILL get beat by nobodies and non-entities using exactly the same tactic that would beat your Barcelona's, Inter Milan's, Manchester United's etc.
That is where the frustration comes from, I could totally understand if i was losing the same matches against better opposition but winning against lower opposition, its only natural to lose when playing against players better than your current level of ability.
The other EVEN MORE frustrating thing is when your 2/3/4-0 up against a team - take for instance a match i played as Middlesbrough after winning the league 2 seasons in a row and being champions league winners against Derby county, newly promoted with awful players - i'm 4-0 up in the 60th minute and dominating the match, i ease of the gas slightly, as i had done against Barcelona in the champ league final when i won 3-1, and they scored 1 from a free kick, 4-1, not bad, i'll take that...right up until the 78th minute - 94th minute when some little scrote of a player bangs in a hat-trick to draw with me. That is totally unrealisitc, especially considering the very next game i hammered Tottenham 3-0 who had finished 2nd in the Prem the season before. You simply can not put that down to tactical faults, they had 9 shots in the game - 5 on target and scored 4, im sorry but to me that reeks of something being not quite right in the game, might only be a tiny tiny type-o in the code that made the random scorelines and comebacks happen all too often, just an idea for SI to keep in mind for the next one is to maybe turn down the randomness of the scorelines a bit for FM08
