I'm playing with Man Utd against a friend who chose Chelsea, and we are both on the same two players.

I'm sure he will be able to get them, as Chelsea have the same reputation and and enourmous wage budget, together with higher signing fees and bonuses than Man Utd.

Is there a way I can beat him to get those two players?

Well even if you are Man Utd, you should have a wage structure suffiect to attract any player. Just offer him whatever he wants and a little bit more in the salary. Also make sure you offer him a "key role" in the team. If your friend fails to do that, it might just attract the player to you. There is no other way really. You could try to praise him in the media. But your friend will probably follow suit and I'm not even sure if that'll be helpful!! But yeah, meet all his demands and offer him a key role.

Unless the player is the next superstar I wouldn't bump up the wages too much just offer him what you think he is worth in comparison to his intended role in your squad and the other members of your squad. Save money on the wage budget equals more money next year, it can really make the difference.
- also giving him crazy high wages may unsettle your current players in your squad.

If you fail -- that happens. Just look at John Obi Mikel. But then you look at Chelsea's balance sheet at the end of each season HAHAHA!
