I could probably name the managers of every brazilian first division teams, but I'm only able to name some 3-4 from English teams, and 1-2 from German/Spanish/Italian ones. I also don't know any manager in the lower levels of those nations.
Remember that "local" and "regional" are below "national". They reflect reputation within the given country. And there is no way that a manager is going to vastly exceed exceptactions and not at least gain a local or regional reputation in that country. This is not a matter of winning over the board at a bigger club. It's a matter of due credit being given by the game, especially because this affects the ability to sign and keep players.
Based on my experiences and the postings here, it is obvious that the reputation system needs a significant improvement, at least at these lower levels. It should still be quite difficult to earn a national reputation or better, but the game is clearly unrealistic in its failure to recognize the most humble moves from obscurity to local or regional reputation.
I'm not sure I agree, and in fairness I think Michal's assessment is very accurate, although I feel that I am even less knowledgeable.
Certainly, when it comes to having a reputation above national it takes sustained success to gain the repuation. Osasuna for example have been performing way above expectations in the Spanish league this season (despite getting spanked at the weekend) but can I name their manager? No. I haven't got the foggiest!
At a lower level, Caslisle look to be heading for a second successive promotion; undeniably, a very successful period of the managers career. But can I name their manager? No. Can many people from my part of the wolrd name their manager? No. Can people in the north of England name him? A few, maybe. Can people from Carlsile name him? I would say fans of the club but no more than that. So I would say that his reputation is obscure, at best, despite his undeniable success.
To be honest I think SI have got it about right!
