Calta Vigo got relegated in their first season in the champions league, Betis have struggled this year and even Villareal are only 9th.
Middlesboroughs league form has been a lot worse then there European form.
Surely if your players weren't used to playing in Europe they would get worked up for the big European nights and then suffer in their domestic form?
Plus if you have a small squad then trying to play on 3 fronts or more is going to cause a lot of injuries.
I don't think its so much a question of cups sucking as where you want your priorities to lie. Picking and choosing where to concentrate your resources is what being a mid-rank top-flight club is all about as you wont be able to compete with the big boys all the time.
In SOuth America ,only the big clubs play in cups.Copa Liberatores and Copa de America. In 12years I havent lost a single cup match because I havent played in any.So no cups dont suck.
Personally, I quite like the cups. Sure sometimes they can be annoying but often they can be a good distraction from the league. In my current season, a couple of good cup wins, including a super exciting win over a higher league opponent, kick started my league form and really got my season going.

This is something that SI should look at. Surely a team like Hinckley, no matter how far down the line, would view a season with relative success in cups as a successful term? For the team to be angry at the league position when they're going great guns in Europe just doesn't fit, for me.
Cups suck @ss, sure, but a team on a good cup run and finishing lower in the league is a better season than just finishing lower in the league. The game should reflect this, and have certain players at least neutral about the season when mid-cup run.
Would Millwall's players have been 'unhappy' with their side's 10th place finish in 03/04 after 9th in 02/03? Playing their first ever FA cup final and qualifying for Europe?
