The game sales and the profits were really secondary, because the series didn't truly explode on the market until later. It all started as a hobby as much as a true business endeavor.
So, while I understand the arguments that people are making about expanding the popularity of the game and increasing sales, there is no doubt that SI already generates enough money to continue its focus on realism and improve this game from year to year.
If suddenly SI starts to consider raw profitability and cheap ploys to lure in new customers, then we're all in for trouble. As we've seen from other game makers, it's not pure realism and a hardcore mentality that sells. It's bells, whistles, graphics, and cheat codes. So if you want to get rich and expand your customer base, then you'll end up prostituting your original intentions and abandoning them for the sake of gimmickry.
Leave Harchester and any other 'brilliant' ideas to EA Sports and the other bastards out there that have no interest in generating a truly realistic management game.
| I'm not sure how you're in a position to determine that "there is no doubt" that SI makes enough money to continue its focus on realism.
It may or may not be true (I don't know either) - but I'm sure they're considering the need to bring their game to new formats in the future, to look at investment in the game to ensure that it remains top of the pile, to fix inherent or existing problems - ultimately, more money means more resources to improve the game.
Ultimately, the situation is this:
- The produced a patch that only alters the definition of "realistic" in the game if you choose to install it. For the residents of this forum, that means absolutely no effect.
- That had negligible, if any, impact on the development of the game as it currently stands.
There's not really any argument against doing it, other than the fact that some people don't like it. But some people do. You can't please all the people all the time, I guess.

I must admit, I cannot see what everyone is getting worked up about.

I'm going to guess the reason for peope getting worked up might be long years of experience with the floodgate scenario.
Can't say I'm overly bothered yet though. It's all a matter of semantics as far as I can see: Can FM be the "most realistic sim ever" if it has Harchester in it?

As long as it's only playable by the option of downloading it and installing it then it's just like "Dr FM's latest transfer update patch".
Ignore it.

SI give us the game we LLaMas want.
If, to do that, they have to do some add-on extras that attract money from the morons who like that kind if thing, I'm all for it. A moron's money is as good as anybody else's, and it's all the sweeter for knowing that they're helping to pay for the game we want (and get!).

| Well said Glyn, it was such a good post that I put a link to it in the GPG and T&T forums. Apparently there are few guys in there that want to see you. Maybe they just want some of the big words explained. |
