I have OpenOffice installed on my personal computer at home. It's a decent alternative to Microsoft Word for writing letters or my RPG cheets or whatever. It's good enough for that, so there's no need for me to pay the money to get Word.
At work I would never want to give up Word though. It is really powerful and after so many iterations, Microsoft really seems to have it done right. But nevertheless, I would never write a diploma thesis using it.
For my thesis work, I used Adobe Framemaker, and it was awesome. Spent a month just learning how to use it though, (although the process of learning continued all the time) but it really was a breeze afterwards. It's nice because you can write chapters in single documents instead of editing the whole chunk, and the master document includes them. Also, inserting pictures and having text float around them and the description text and footnotes and whatever else works really better than in Word, where it's always a hassle.
