So grateful was I to the Lewes chairman for rescuing me from the managerial doldrums after my Yeading relegation, I decided that unflinching loyalty and hard work for many years to come would be the least I could do to repay him.
Unfortunately, a week later Kettering came knocking on the door and, tempted by the bigger budget on offer, I was off quicker than a rat up a drainpipe. :p

What the Kettering board failed to mention, however, was a propensity for financial mismanagement that would make an Enron executive blush, the bank balance being massively in the red and paying ridiculous wages to some very average players. Out went 11, including the star SC for £130k to Walsall, and in came 6 as the wage bill was brought under control.
An impressive season saw us notch up 72 points, but we fell just short of the playoffs despite winning our last four matches. In fact we were improbably denied on the last day by Histon's victory against runaway leaders Chester.
Nevertheless, a fine run to the second round of the FA Cup, where we went down 4-2 away to Darlington, boosted the coffers and left me quietly confident of a decent promotion push next season. Up the Poppies!
