Thought I'd continue my experiment as a side attraction in my Worcester save, so here's the next two seasons as a comparison to the first.
The only difference is that I've moved to Conference South from the North, though this is negliable really. 2005/6 F.A. Cup

Christ, replays everywhere, which played havoc with the league campaign and a big backlog of fixtures. So, Cups suck arse... but oddly, it gave some of my young players a run out who I wouldn't have played ordinarily, and they turned out to be a lot better than I thought they were. In the long run, my league form improved and instead of being in the bottom five, further into the season I'm now in mid table safety thanks to the youngsters who have earned themselves a first team place.
Incidentily, I've got 27 players at the club at the moment, around 14 I think are teenagers (three through the club's youth system).

in an ideal world for the lower league teams is that they make it to the first round of the FA Cup and play a well supported team with a high attendance (in recent years Sheffield Wednesday, now its Forest) home and get a replay away to maximise teh money (don't forget that the BBC also gives 13k per highlights package for the first round - in the real world anyway)

I'm all for them....As you mentioned, if your squad is deep enough you can play the reserve and younger players just to see their form. If you don't make it far then you haven't worked your regulars hard. If you do make it far enough then the money is well worth it.
What truly sucks is that as a Conference team I drew the D1 side in the Cup and was soundly trounced. But not that I've moved up to D1 myself and I draw the Conference side...I still get bloody trounced!
nice analysis Nobby. KUTGW

Continuing the 'research' into how financially beneficial cup runs can be as opposed to potentially crippling your squad.
Football Manager 2006

I was gonna write that cups are great, and some are, at least financially. Especially when you get the Mother of moneyshakers away, whether it be Man Utd or Celtic.
But then I got trounced twice this season. Last by bottom-of-the-league Peterhead 0-4, with two guys out in the first half. Half the squad below 80% for the next game. Cups Suck Arse! But there are exceptions, as you have clearly shown. It's well worth giving it a shot if you have the squad to back it up. With only the first-eleven half-decent it's no point really. The league will suffer too much.

I really like the FA cup both in the real world and the game, the financial benifits can be excellent, as i found by drawing Man Citeh away in the 4th round in my Carlisle save. Fine I had to re-arange a few games and my team were slightly tired after, but the following season i was able to have a transfer budget for the first time in the save.
I treat the rest of the cups with the contempt they deserve though.
