With the club not having a pot to [pass water] in or a window to throw it out of, cost cutting is the order of the day, several backup players are given their P45s, with only a few new faces coming in. A poor showing in the cup, where one of the players I let go scores the winner, appears to be a sign of things to come. An early injury sees me forced to use a player who had been filling in at right back with mixed results, up front. He turned out to be a revelation, and with a striker signed last July coming in to form as well we put 1DS defences to sword, going on an excellent 19 game unbeaten run, and we are in a commanding lead by July.
Defeat at Atavidabergs brings us crashing down to earth and a couple of injuries expose the paper-thin nature of our squad. We start turning wins into draws and draws into defeats and manage to throw away an 11 point lead to gift the title to Falkenburg. We are entered in the playoffs against a tough looking Nykoping side, who were on a 6 game unbeaten run, I needn’t have worried, we do a very professional job at home winning 2-0 and go on to teach them a lesson in football at theirs, romping home to a 6-0 victory on aggregate.
The First Division Elite awaits us next year, and we will need money to compete at this level, with this in mind I agree to sell our best centre-half to Premiership basement boys Gelfe, and my Swedish U19 striker, who hardly featured this term, moves on to IFK Malmo, for a combined total of £450k.
Finished: 2nd P (won 6-0 on agg against Nykoping in playoff final)
Swedish cup: 1st R (lost 2-1 to Skalhamn)
Players in: 3 – 0k
Players out: 2 – 450k
Players released: 5

The first division elite looks a daunting prospect for our small club, and the situation is not made any easier by the board’s refusal, despite us being 300k in the black, to give me any transfer money whatsoever. As a result we end up losing out to 2nd division clubs who can stump up a couple of grand for players we need on several occasions. We make a shaky start to the league campaign, simply lacking the quality to compete with many of the teams in this division, and go on a dismal run of 12 games without a win between June and August. The fans at least have something to cheer about as we go a decent run in the cup, reaching the quarter finals, before going out at home to Hacken.
The fickle folk of Falu are still not very excited about the ‘higher’ level of football on show at Kopparvallen, a disappointing 153 fans turn up for a game against former Premiership high-flyers Gelfe, though I can hardly blame them for being unimpressed with the way we were playing. Something had to give if we were to avoid the drop and it did in August when I sold a promising Norwegian midfielder for 500k to provide some transfer funds, I had several targets lined up to improve our squad but most refused to join us, and by the time the transfer window closed only two players had been brought in. The final third of the season was a tense time as we scraped for our lives, we needed a win on the last day to ensure survival and got it thanks to an 87th minute goalmouth scramble, limping over the line with 33 points.
Our best player by a mile and the only reason we stayed up was our star striker, he bagged 21 goals in 19 starts, more than the rest of the squad combined and scored the 1st & 2nd in 1DE goal of the season.
Finished: 12th – 33pts
Swedish cup: QF (lost 0-1 to Hacken)
Players in: 8 – 1k
Players out: 1 – 500k
Players released: 8

The year starts with a welcome improvement to our training facilities, now rated as good, and our first youth players, who are rated as anything but. It’s a busy winter at Falu with several players coming and going, the bookies however don’t see us making much progress and have us at a less than generous 1000/1 for the title, I think we’ve improved though. We go on to make a decent start, the players I’ve bought in giving us that bit of quality to compete, the main difference to last year is that now we look as if we can give anyone a game in this division. In addition to our solid league form, we make the quarter finals of the Swedish cup for the second year running, getting a record crowd of 2070 for our game against Kalmar FF.
Our improving fortunes see some of our players start to attract the attention of bigger clubs and our young DR moves on to Finnish side Tampere Utd for £250k, because of this we are able to fend off some interest in other players, including an £800k bid for our star striker from Premiership Orgyte. The last few months of the season see us hit some indifferent form, a rare highlight being doing the double over Gelfe, but we are never in any real danger, finishing up in 9th. With safety guaranteed I let a promising midfield try his luck in the Premiership with GAIS, leaving us with a substantial transfer kitty for next year.
Finished: 9th – 40pts
Swedish cup: QF (lost 1-3 to Kalmar FF)
Players in: 11 – 9k
Players out: 2 – 500k
Players released: 6

I spend the winter looking to strengthen the squad and our healthy financial position enables to bring in several new faces, the best of whom is a centre-half for 20k, he’s an U-19 regular at the tender age of 16 and I predict big things for him in years to come. Although I miss out on a few of my targets, we are looking in pretty good shape to start the new season with the bookies shortening our promotion odds to a mere 150/1. We make a good start and it’s clear to see that we’ve got that bit of quality that was lacking before, an early exit in the cup being the only real disappointment.
A couple of injuries sees my very promising DC get his chance, which he grabs with both hands, come July he’s attracting interest from all over Scandinavia, I fend off these offers, but a £1million offer from French champions league hopefuls Auxerre is too good to turn down, especially as they’re prepared to let him stay with us for a further year. This windfall allows us to rebuff all the unwanted attention in the rest of our squad and we look good come August. Although two of the sides that came down last year are threatening to run away with it, we’re looking like a good bet for the playoffs, my star striker even gets a call up to the Sweden squad for his goal scoring exploits . The team is playing well and come October we’re in a strong position with a playoff spot almost secured, but GIF Sundsvall, who we did the double over, have other ideas and score 9 goals in their last two games to snatch 3rd place from under our noses on goal difference.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed, but take comfort from the fact we played well for most of this year and have certainly come a long way as a team. The under U-18s also do a bit to soften the blow by winning their league.
Finished: 4th – 56pts
Swedish cup: 3rd R (lost 0-2 to Hammerby)
Players in: 8 – 36k
Players out: 2 – 500k
Players released: 5
