The 4-4-2 Tactic (Named as is THE 4-4-2 tactic I decided to use)
Currently this tactic is being used both Home and Away. Did have an Away tactic but was not as successful as they ended up being away from home.
This is a basic 4-4-2 with wingers having farrows going up to AMR and AML.
Team Instructions
I like my teams to be attacking so this is the basis of the formation with the mentality being on the first Attacking notch. I have a short passing as well, with a tempo that is on the last notch of normal leading towards slow, allowing for my players to control the ball and create chances. Width is Normal while Closing Down is a little bit forward, asking them to close more than normal but not too much, as still want my players in space to receive ball for my passing game. Time Wasting is down on rare, as I stated that the emphasis of this tactic is on attacking and winning games. This also includes the defensive line being pushed up. A Man and Tight Marking system is also employed by the team.
Player Instructions
DR/DL – I ask my fullbacks to make forward runs to get forward in the game, but don’t want them to be too overly attacking so I leave them on normal mentality.
DC – My DCs are DCs and I ask very little else from them, so their mentality and creative freedom are both on little.
MR/ML – They are asked to be attacking and their mentality is one notch before the attacking, as I don’t want them to be too far out of position to receive passes or upset the balance of the side.
MC L – This Midfielder is on the same mentality as the wingers and is asked to get forward with the ball as much as possible.
MCR- This Midfielder is asked to close down a lot while staying with a normal mentality.
ST – My Strikers are Strikers, they are both encouraged to be attacking, make forward runs and run with the ball, their goal is to score the goals.
Tweaks
If I'm holding onto a lead, I will switch to play balls down flanks, high time wasting, sarrows for the strikers and a direct tactic. Only if protecting 1 goal lead or if opponents start to really pile on the pressure.
Success
This tactic was used all season with Tottenham Hotspur in my 3rd season.
Tottenham 3rd Season – 4th in Premiership, Uefa Cup Winners, F.A. Cup Winners
I’ve now started in my forth season with Tottenham, while also using this tactic with my Huddersfield tactic after a poor season using my previous tactic for them in championship and will report back.
Please try out the tactic and give any feedback to improve the tactic.
