I am very new to the world of soccer. I live in the United States and i find soccer to be very intresting. Well, since i'm new to the sport...how should i do my tatics? Just set the formation based on my team? I have barcelona (which is my favoriot team) and I know ronaldinho is a AM. Should i just set a formation which allows him to work his magic? Or should i set team instructions too. If I have to set team instructions then I would not know what to do lol.

Now to the topic....or should I watch every game that i play to the full length and correct things as I watch?

I get a formation i like and tweak it to my team, barcelona should play well with any formation as they have the players...

I watch my games on key as you still see what happens during the games, and it doesnt take an age to go through it, im currently on a 59 game unbeaten run with the Gooners so back the the game for me..........

Ok, you are the manager, you have the power to choose what fomation you want to use. There are many topics here that give you a successful formation (in most occasions).

Barcelona usually use a 4-3-3 tactic (4 defenders, 4 in midfield, 2 wingers assisting the lone striker).

Ronaldinho can play well in any of the AM positions. You can alter where he plays to accomodate other players.

I recommend this line-up:
GK: Valdes
DR: Zambrotta
DL: Abidal
DC: Puyol
DC: Milito/Marquez
CM: Xavi
CM: Iniesta
CM: Deco/Toure
AML: Ronaldinho
AMR: Messi
STR: Eto'o/Henry

Team and individual instructions are very important. It can take you a while to set up but you wont have to do it again (often).

You have to look at each players abilities and set the instructions depending on that;
eg. The person with the highest "Corners" attribute should ofcourse take corner kicks.
eg2. People with high "creativity" should be given high creative freedom so Ronaldinho will be able to work his magic

You should read the booklet as it'll give you a basic idea of how to play etc.

Oh, and I know this is off topic but, i like training young players into the superstars of tommorow. Has anybody been successful doing that? I heard that the regens have very low CA that it is impossible to develop them.

If you purchased the digital download, in the folder that the game installed itself to (probably CProgram Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2008\ ) there should be a couple of manuals in different languages in .pdf format. Also, you will definitely be able to train Bojan and Dos Santos into great players, they always seem to turn out well and are already on your team.

I develop tactics by setting a formation and team instructions (width,tempo,creative freedom) that I think will fit the players I already have, then setting individual instructions for mentality and closing down to suit those positions, then watch the preseason friendlys in full (though on a fast pace) to tweak settings by watching where my team is going wrong.

My Barcelona side currently plays a high tempo that is according to the game a 2-2-2-3-1, but is really 4-3-3.
