Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Goalkeeper Training ? What do you use?

I've searched numerous threads, even going back to fm07 threads and only find 1-2 brief responses concerning my question.

The question I wish to ask is why do you even want to have Ball Control training for Goalie schedules?

Let's say your keeper doesn't need to Long Kick and as always set to collect. But it wouldn't hurt to just let Long Kick degrade would it?

I have read allot of threads concerning goalie attributes and many state that Composure and Concentration are of importance. So wouldn't it be better to drop all Ball Control in favor of Shooting (Composure) or Defending (Concentration). Or do composure and concentration simply just improve slowly over time for goalkeepers (or just dont degrade down to 0) ?

thanks in advance

I got confused with long throw(and kick) for Set Piece training.

Anyway, same applies to set piece training too, why would a keeper schedule need it.

Hiya Nic,

I'll show you why you are mistaken, even though your theory is not illogical. It's just that as far as the game is concerned, the only training areas that affect a goalie's stats are the ones which have at least a few clicks on them in the default "Goalkeeper" schedule that comes with the game. You can know this by going to -

1. Click on one of your goalies to open up their panel.

2. Go to his Training - Attributes.

3. Click on "Training Category" (normally found on the top-right).

4. It will show you the list of training categories affecting a goalie's attributes.

5. These are as follows - Strength, Aerobic, Goalkeeping, Tactics, Ball Control & Set Pieces.

6. I have experimented by having some Defending and Attacking training in place, but these categories have never appeared in the list, so they are entirely useless for a goalie.

7. Click on each individual category on the list, and you will see what attributes are affected by that category.

8. For example, Ball Control affects Technique, which happens to be good for any type of player, including a goalie, because they will be more effective at whatever they attempt.

9. Set Pieces are necessary for the goalkicks. Note that no outfield player takes them, it's always the goalie, so at least a tiny amount of Set Piece training is advisable.

The following is the best goalie training schedule out of the ones I have tried -

Ball control training also affects passing (along with technique, as was mentioned above). Yes, for GKs too.

Goalkeepers dont need to train in setpieces . How accurate the goalkicks are depends on hes technique, and how long he can kick it depends on hes kicking ability.
And yes a keeper need to train in passing - my goalkeeper have on average 20 passes each match.
I also train them in "defending" - this is to keep the concentration stats on a ok level so they dont make late game error.(I done some test with gk on 1 and 20 concentration and it makes a difference in fm08)
Tactics and goalkeeping ability is the most important stats so I keep training level high.
Strength is vital when your keeper challenge for the ball(also the air on corners and when the opponent cross the ball into the area).

So it fine to have no training for concentration and composure then? Will those 2 stats just drop to a certain level and just stay?

I still don't see why ball control is useful at all. Technique maybe, but passing is under Attacking Coaching no?

-The set-pieces training category covers a player's crossing, corners, free kicks, penalty taking and long throws. (Only see long throw being of any importance here)

-Ball Control - Technique, Dribbling,First Touch and Heading (Miss anything?)

i believe that BC training is important fol goalies aswell, because it replaces "overload att" and "overload def" from previous versions, and it also make sense to me that goalies train with team when practicing free kicks and corners to improve their reaction on high balls into area etc. there was a thread about this, guy experimented with this and it showed good results.
I think it was cleon, but i'm not shure so..
