In the game, Messi and Silva perform better than Ronaldo when put in a standard tactic.
IRL, Ronaldo has no equal on the flanks, but his usefulness stops when he is moved to the AMC role, which is actually Messi's favored position. In other words, Messi would fit better in any team out there, whereas for Ronaldo to do that the team would have to accomodate their style of play. Not all teams in the world rely on wingplay, put Ronaldo in Serie A and he'll have a tough type dominating in closed space. Messi can work magic in 2-3 square feet, Ronaldo needs his space. That's why I think Messi is a better player in the real world.

With Ronaldo not so hot on crossing, maybe he's not so good at wing play?
If I wanted a WINGER, I wouldn't be picking Ronaldo, he's much more of a player that cuts inside, like Charles N'Zogbia.
If I were after a winger, I'd want a player muchg more adept at crossing.

I can't say the same about Messi, but I really have seen Kaka perform when it matters.
Maybe not so well as Ronaldo, but very well nonetheless.

'yet to see Ronaldo play well'
...just realised what you actually said... Ronaldo THRIVES off the big games! He said himself how media attention make him perform better!
I HATE the git, but he is a good, solid Premiership performer, and cannot be said to be worse at the bigger games.

He's a massive player last season he won the prem for utd , he carried utd most the season ,
Came up with so many winning goals in key times within games ,
He also stuck England out twice   .
Kaka
Ronaldo
messi
in that order , Even Deco said so today on sky sports website that Ronaldo is better than messi ,
He has scored a massive 17goals so far this season and i think hes made a fair few aswell ,

A winger, by definition, is not a player whose main job is to cross the ball. I doubt Cristiano is inept at crossing, it's just that with the hulking behemoths (lol) Man U employs for a strike force, Ferguson has instructed him to cut inside.
Despite that, Ronaldo needs his space on the wings, and his team have to play wide to give him just that. Once he beats the fullback in teh flank, he creates havoc. It'd be tough for him to just that amount of damage when playing against tight Serie A defenses week in, week out.

Ronaldo may say that he thrives off of the big games, but from what i've seen he went missing against Milan last season and also in the FA Cup final and certainly doesnt have the same impact against the big teams as he does the lesser teams.
You could argue that the big games bring out the best in Kaka and Messi, what with Messi's hatrick against Madrid last season and kaka's continued brilliance in the Champions League.
I think its a mentality issue, which im sure he will put right but at the inthe future, in my opinion Kaka and Messi are more effective in the big games making the better players. Who knows Ronaldo might do somkething this year in the latter stages of the CL.

| lol nice example, you forgot one thing, kaka was almost in vacations in the Serie A because Milan could never win it last year, and if he's so good why is Milan so bad this year in Serie A?? and kaka would never played do well in the champs against ManU if it wanst for gattuso and pirlo taking the ball out of CR. if CR was in italy and played like in PL the defenders would make many fouls and would be sent off.

I would just like to add some more of my opinion. IRL, Ronaldo is yet to prove himself in the big games - like vs. Milan in CL last season or like vs. France in last World Cup. And I'm sure he will, soon, just hasn't done it yet. Messi and Kaka have shown their class in big games. Messi shined and carried Argentina in the Youth World Cup. He also scored a hat-trick against Real M last season, which is a huge achievement!
In FM08, Ronaldo assists more and constantly gets 8's for rating. While Messi scores more and his ratings vary between 7 and 9.
And one more thing. Don't forget the age difference! Kaka is almost fully developed by now as he is 25. Ronaldo is 2-3 years younger than him, but 2 years older than Leo, at 22 soon to be 23. And Messi just turned 20 in the summer.
p.s. Someone mentioned Fabregas. Yes, he is also turning into top-class. But if we are going to talk about him then we have to put Iniesta into the mix.
