“ Alpe d'Huez” are the pair or you mad or just damn good cyclist? I did the London to Brighton ride about 15 years ago. It only about 50 miles but has a long hill a the end called ditchling beacon (or something like that). Well after somthing like 40 miles in the saddle I got off the bike and had a rest before taking on the hill. Half an hour later and my muscles had all seized up, I jumped on the bike and I swear to god I thought somebody had taken the saddle off.  Oh the pain… Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it…
This is Alpe d'Huez there is no difficult bit it is all hell!! If I remember rightly Ditchling beacon was a 1 in 10 climb for about a mile. Alpe d'Huez is about a 1 in 9 climb for about 8 miles.
I never really had a proper crack at ditchling beacon, I had to stop half way for ages to let an ambulance up. Somebody had a heart attach half way up the hill. A bit Ironic that we were cycling for the British heard foundation. :o

The beginning of d'Huez is apparently the toughest part, but 1 in 9 isn't that difficult. There's a hill outside of Sidmouth which I've cycled up which is a 1 in 5 (and goes on for about 3/4 of a mile), and I'm going to give Porlock Hill in Somerset a crack soon which I believe is a 1 in 7 average (with some 1 in 4 sections).
The obvious difference, though, are these are "hills" while Alpe d'Huez is a "mountain".
